Gyeong-eun: 네. 두 번째 시즌이에요.
Hyunwoo: Season 2, right? And before we go into today’s lesson, I’d like to introduce our new host, our new beautiful host. 경은 씨 Everyone, 경은 씨를 소개합니다.
Gyeong-eun: 네, 현우 씨. 고마워요!
Hyunwoo: 네.
Gyeong-eun: 그리고, Nice to meet you, everyone. 만나서 반갑고요, 앞으로 잘 부탁드려요! 저하고 같이 재미있게 공부해요.
Hyunwoo: 저하고도 같이, 재미있게…
Gyeong-eun: 네! 다 같이 재미있게 공부해요.
Hyunwoo: 네. Great! Intermediate season 2 will have 25 lessons,
Gyeong-eun: 스물다섯 개 레슨
Hyunwoo: And we’ll have 5 by-part series
Gyeong-eun: 아, 재밌을 것 같아요. 빨리 시작해요!
Hyunwoo: Ok, is everyone ready to go into the very first lesson of Intermediate season 2?
Gyeong-eun: Of course! 물론이죠!
Hyunwoo: Ok! Today we have the first dialogue in the first by-part series. 경은 씨, in this lesson, what can we learn?
Gyeong-eun: ”해야 하다”, “해야 돼다”. “안 해도 돼다”.
Hyunwoo: “Should,” “Must,” and “Don’t have to”; very useful grammatical patterns. So this conversation takes place in the restaurant where
Gyeong-eun: 진경
Hyunwoo: is working as a part-timer.
Gyeong-eun: 식당에서 일어나는 대화예요. 진경이가 여기에서 아르바이트를 하고 있어요.
Hyunwoo: And the conversation is between?
Gyeong-eun: 진경 and 수영
Hyunwoo: The speakers are friends, therefore the speakers will be speaking intimate language,
Gyeong-eun: 반말 (banmal)
Gyeong-eun: 네, 같이 들어 봐요.
Hyunwoo: 네.
DIALOGUE
Hyunwoo: One more time, with the English.
(1)수영: 진경아, 나 왔어. 많이 바빠?
Keith: Hey Jingyeong. I'm here. Are you very busy?
(2)진경: 어, 수영아. 지금은 안 바빠. 빨리 들어와.
Keith: Hey, Suyeong. I'm not busy now. Come on in quick.
(3)수영: 넌 정말 좋겠다. 수능 끝나고 바로 알바 하니까... 나도 알바 구해야 돼. 좀 소개시켜 줘. 나도 여기서 일할 수 있어?
Keith: I envy you so much. You're doing a part-time job right after the college entrance exam. I have to find myself a part-time job, too. Hook me up with a job. Can I work here, too?
(4)진경: 너는 알바 안 해도 되잖아.
Keith: But you don't have to do any part-time job, do you?
(5)수영: 아니야. 나도 해야 돼. 요즘 엄마가 용돈을 안 줘.
Keith: Yes, I have to, too. My mom doesn't give me allowance these days.
(6)진경: 정말? 여기도... 알바생 구해야 되는데... 사장님한테 물어볼게.
Keith: Really? We have to find a part-timer over here, too. I'll ask the owner.
(7)수영: 정말? 고마워!
Keith: Really? Thanks!
(8)진경: 응. 근데, 밥 안 먹었지? 왔으니까, 밥 먹고 가야 돼. 여기 진짜 맛있어. 돈은 안 내도 돼. 내가 사 줄게.
Keith: Sure. By the way, you haven't eaten, have you? Since you're here, you have to eat before you go. It's very delicious here. You don't have to pay money. I'll buy for you.
(9)수영: 진짜? 알았어! 야.... 진경아... 근데... 저 남자 누구야?
Keith: Really? Okay! Hey...Jingyeong...by the way, who's that guy over there?
(10)진경: 누구?
Keith: Who?
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunwoo: Who do you think 진경 saw? 진경이가 누구를 본 것 같아요?
Gyeong-eun: I think she found a good-looking man. 잘 생긴 남자를 찾은 것 같은데요?
Hyunwoo: Maybe, or maybe she found me! And she wants to know about me.
Gyeong-eun: Hyunwoo 씨! I told you this is not going to be funny! Hyunwoo 씨가 대화에 왜 나와요? 지금 여기 있잖아요!
Hyunwoo: That hurts! Ok, back on track! We'll see who she saw in our next lesson, and for now, let's go to the vocab!
Gyeong-eun: 네. 좋은 생각이에요.
VOCAB LIST
Hyunwoo: Let's take a look at the vocabulary for this lesson.

Hyunwoo: college entrance exam
Gyeong-eun: 수능시험 [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Gyeong-eun: 수능시험 [natural native speed]

Hyunwoo: part-time job
Gyeong-eun: 알바 [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Gyeong-eun: 알바 [natural native speed]
: Next:
Gyeong-eun: 소개시키다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: to introduce
Gyeong-eun: 소개시키다 [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Gyeong-eun: 소개시키다 [natural native speed]
: Next:
Gyeong-eun: 용돈 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: allowance, spending money
Gyeong-eun: 용돈 [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Gyeong-eun: 용돈 [natural native speed]
: Next:
Gyeong-eun: 구하다 [natural native speed]
Hyunwoo: to get
Gyeong-eun: 구하다 [slowly - broken down by syllable]
Gyeong-eun: 구하다 [natural native speed]
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE
Hyunwoo: Let's have a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson.
Gyeong-eun: 수능시험
Hyunwoo: college entrance exam. And what's the full version of this word?
Gyeong-eun: 대학 수학 능력 시험
Hyunwoo: College Studying Ability Test
Gyeong-eun: So you take the first letters of 수학 and 능력, and say 수능 or 수능 시험.
Hyunwoo: This was confusing for me at first. I had always thought 수학 was Mathematics before I went to highschool and actually had to start worrying about taking this test. Gyeong-eun 씨는 안 그랬어요?
Gyeong-eun: 저도 수학 능력 시험이 Mathematics 시험이라고 생각했는데, 고등학교 들어가서 알았어요.
Hyunwoo: Good to know I'm not alone! How did you do on your 수능시험?
Gyeong-eun: 저요? I forgot. It was a long long time ago! 다음 단어 보는 거 어때요?
Hyunwoo: Okay! What are we looking at next?
Gyeong-eun: 알바
Hyunwoo: part-time job
Gyeong-eun: Sometimes we say 아르바이트, and sometimes we say 알바.
Hyunwoo: Which one do YOU use more often?
Gyeong-eun: 아르바이트요.
Hyunwoo: 저도 아르바이트라고 많이 해요. What are some common part-time jobs in Korea? 한국에서 많이 하는 아르바이트는 뭐죠?
Gyeong-eun: 음... teaching, like private tutoring
Hyunwoo: 과외
Gyeong-eun: working at convenience stores
Hyunwoo: 편의점 아르바이트
Gyeong-eun: working at fastfood restaurants
Hyunwoo: 패스트푸드점 아르바이트. Okay, what are we looking at next?
Gyeong-eun: 소개시키다
Hyunwoo: to introduce. How is this different from 소개하다? 어떻게 달라요?
Gyeong-eun: 거의 똑같아요. They're almost the same, but 소개시키다 is more personal and direct.
Hyunwoo: Like when you're introducing your friends directly to me.
Gyeong-eun: Yeah, but ... I'm not sure if I'll do that. 제가 왜 제 친구들을 Hyunwoo 씨한테 소개시켜 줘야 되죠?
Hyunwoo: Because I'm looking for friends. Okay, just kidding, I just wanted to introduce next word 구하다, which means to look for.
Gyeong-eun: 구하다 is an interesting word.
Hyunwoo: 구 is a Hanja word, Hanja meaning chinese characters, and this 구 means “to look for.”
Gyeong-eun: When I open a Korean newspaper, there's always this section, 구인, 구직.
Hyunwoo: Right! 구 means “to look for,” 인 means “person,” so 구인 means Help Wanted
Gyeong-eun: And in 구직, 구 means “to look for,” and 직 means “a job,” so 구직 means Job Wanted.

Lesson focus

Hyunwoo: What's today's grammar point?
Gyeong-eun: Today we have two grammar points.
Hyunwoo: 어, 두 개?
Gyeong-eun: 네, 두 개 있어요.
Hyunwoo: 네.
One is how to say 'you should do something, or you must do something'
Hyunwoo: And what's the other one?
Gyeong-eun: The other one is how to say the opposite - 'you don't have to do something'
Hyunwoo: Sounds useful to know! And if you already know these grammar point, let's see how they are contrary to each other. Let's look at the first one, how do you say "should" or "must" ?
Gyeong-eun: -아/어/여야 되다 or -아/어/여야 하다
Hyunwoo: Ok So how do you use this in a sentence?
Gyeong-eun: You take the verb stem and add this structure, so 가다 becomes 가야 되다 or 가야 하다.
Hyunwoo: you must go, you should go. But between 가야 되다 and 가야 하다 which one do you use more ofteN?
Gyeong-eun: I use 가야 되다 more often. 가야 하다 is more for writing.
Hyunwoo: Good. Let's look at some examples. Please give me the Korean sentences for what I say in English.
Gyeong-eun: Okay.
Hyunwoo: I have to go now.
Gyeong-eun: 지금 가야 돼요.
Hyunwoo: Now in the past tense, 'I had to go.'
Gyeong-eun: 가야 됐어요.
Hyunwoo: future / I will have to go.
Gyeong-eun: 가야 될 거예요.
Hyunwoo: Good. Gyeong-eun, what do you have to do? Gyeong-eun 씨는 뭐 해야 돼요?
Gyeong-eun: Grammar Point 2, 소개해야 돼요. I have to introduce the second grammar point!
Hyunwoo: Glad that you didn't forget. 안 잊어버려서 다행이에요. So the second grammar point is how to say 'you don't have to' .
Gyeong-eun: 안 + 아/어/여도 되다
Hyunwoo: How do you use that in a sentence? say, to do is 하다. how do you say "I don't have to do it."
Gyeong-eun: 안 해도 돼요.
Hyunwoo: You don't have to know.
Gyeong-eun: Well this is an exception. YOu don't say 안 알아도 돼요, but you say 몰라도 돼요.
Hyunwoo: You don't have to hurry.
Gyeong-eun: 안 서둘러도 돼요.
Hyunwoo: You don't have to buy me lunch today.
Gyeong-eun: 오늘 저한테 점심 안 사 줘도 돼요.
Hyunwoo: 네, 알았어요.
Gyeong-eun: No actually, you have to buy me lunch today. 점심 사 줘야 돼요.
Hyunwoo: 아니에요. 안 사 줘도 돼요. I don't have to. I know you're popular and have a lot other people who want to have to buy you lunch. And I don't have time to buy you lunch. I gotta go somewhere. 어디 가야 돼요.
Gyeong-eun: 어? 어디 가는데요? Where are you going?
Hyunwoo: You don't have to know. 몰라도 돼요.
Gyeong-eun: Okay. I don't have to know where you're going either. 저도 Hyunwoo 씨가 어디 가는지 몰라도 돼요.
Hyunwoo: How did these grammatical structures come out in today's dialog?
(3)수영: 나도 알바 구해야 돼.
Hyunwoo: I have to find myself a part-time job, too.
(4)진경: 너는 알바 안 해도 되잖아.
Hyunwoo: But you don't have to do any part-time job, do you?
(5)수영: 나도 해야 돼.
Hyunwoo: I have to do it, too.
(6)진경: 여기도... 알바생 구해야 되는데...
Hyunwoo: We have to find a part-timer over here too.
(8)진경: 밥 먹고 가야 돼.
Hyunwoo: you have to eat before you go.
Gyeong-eun: 돈은 안 내도 돼.
Hyunwoo: You don't have to pay money.
Hyunwoo: What a good friend!
Gyeong-eun: 그리고 경은이가 말했어요. 현우 씨, 밥 사주세요.
Hyunwoo: No, she didn’t say that.

Outro

Hyunwoo: Ok, so I think we’ve looked at plenty of examples. So 경은 씨, that’s it for today.
Gyeong-eun: 어, 정말요? 벌써 끝났어요?
Hyunwoo: 네, 끝났어요. 경은 씨, 첫 번째 레슨 어땠어요?
Gyeong-eun: 네, 너무 재밌었어요. 다음 거 또 하고 싶어요.
Hyunwoo: What do you think, everybody? 재미 있었어요? (네, 아니요?) 네, 안녕히 계세요!
Gyeong-eun: 안녕히 계세요.
