Poor Mouse

Postby yhenry » April 3rd, 2009 11:52 am

See if any KSL person can translate this funny conversation.
Use 반말 if you want.

A: I'm in a big trouble!
B: Why is that?
A: I saw a mouse in my house!
B: Oh, well, all you need to do is use a trap.
A: I don't have one.
B: Well then, buy one.
A: Can't afford one.
B: I can give you mine if you want.
A: That sounds good.
B: All you need to do is just use some cheese in order to make the mouse come to the trap.
A: I don't have any cheese.
B: Okay then, take a piece of bread and put a bit of oil in it and put it in the trap.
A: I don't have oil.
B: Well, then put only a small piece of bread.
A: I don't have bread.
B: Then what is the mouse doing at your house?!

그러면 담배를 끊는 것이 좋겠다 Then, you may as well give up smoking.
그러면 나는 어떻게 해야 하지? In that case, what shall I do?

*조금 기름(조금/좀) 넣고
English; a little조금 oil 기름
Korean: 기름 oil 조금 넣고 put in a little; 조금 can be noun or adverb, not adjective, so it should come before verb, not noun. That is why 조금 기름 (noun and noun) don't work.

Wow! That went better than I was expecting. But I clearly don't know how to use 뿐이다. Can you clear that up for me? I thought it communicated the "all you need to do" / "only" in those sentences.

뿐이다 means only such and no more or only way to do or to be, and no other way, after you have tried everything or seen no better option.
It obviously is used diffently from the meaning of 'all you have to do'.
* 이제 믿을 것은 오직 실력뿐이다. All you can trust is only your ability- that is what's left to do.
* 우리 민족의 염원은 통일뿐이다. our nation's cherished desire is only to be united.
* 가진 것은 이것뿐이다. All I have is only this.

갖고 있는 것이라고는 이것 뿐이다 This is all I have.

아는 것이라고는 그것뿐이다 I know no more than that.
나는 내 의무를 다했을 뿐이다 I have done nothing but my duty.

믿을 사람은 너뿐이다 I have no one but you to count on.

Hi, Austin. :)
In addition to Henry's answer, I'll show you a better way to translate it.

All you need to do is use a trap.
> 네가 할 일은 덫을 놓는 것 뿐이다.

This is literal one but it's kinda weird to say in colloquial.
More natural way would be..

(너는) 덫을 놓기만 하면 된다.

...기만 하면 되다 is so useful in that case.
You can even express its original nuance of 'only' by using it.

In many cases,
You can say simply as below in order to talk about a solution or alternative though.

덫을 놓으면 되지. (되잖아)

Right.
You can use '만' to convey the thought in 'all you have to do'.

Here are the dictionary definitions for '만':

1【단지 limited to one time or thing】only;alone;just;merely;simply;very;but;except
꼭 한번*만 봐줘 take a look or give me a break only once
일생에 딱 한번*만 하는게 뭐지? What a thing you do only once in your life time?
한번*만 더 해 do just once more
이번*만은 않돼 no can do for this once/for this time only

방에는 그녀와 그 둘*만 있었다 He was alone with her in the room.

그것만이 아니다 Not only that (there are more)

2【정도·범위 degree or boundary】as many as;as much as;enough 《to do a thing》;to the amount[extent] of;so far as;all one has[can];all there is

이만큼*만 있으면 사전을 살 수 있다 This amount will be enough to buy a dictionary.
그*만한 길이로 충분합니까? Is it long enough?
평판*만으로 판단할 때 그는 위대한 사람같다 Being judged only by reputation, he seems to be a great man.

오늘은 이*만 해 두자 let's leave at that (much) for today.
그런 생각을 가지고 있는 것은 일부 사람들*만이다 The idea is limited only to a certain group of people.
자네 차를 오전중*만 빌릴 수 없을까? Can´t I borrow your car for this morning only?
잘 모르지만 그에게 애인이 없다는 것*만은 확실하다 I am not quite sure, but one thing I can say positively is that he has no girlfriend.

3【상당 worth]
500원어치*만 주세요 Please give me only 500 won´s worth.
이 책은 읽을 *만하다 This book is worth reading.
나도 먹고 살 *만한 수입이 필요하다 I must have income enough to get by.
