uhh.. getting a haircut?

so.. i'm getting a haircut at a korean salon tomorrow.... apparently they do the best straightening treatments at this certain salon so my friend is going there tomorrow and wants me to go (almost 2 hours from my house at 1030 am, i might add) with her so she doesn't have to sit by herself for 4 hours.. and also to translate, haha. she said last time people didn't really speak english, and she doesn't speak korean, so she was really bored by herself for that long.

anyway.. i need a haircut, so i might as well get one while i'm there.

but i don't know any kind of language that would usually be used while getting a haircut.

first, what do you say for getting a haircut? and how would i say things like "can you make it a little shorter?" or "not too short" or "up to about here" (indicating how short to cut it)... what words do you use for "layers" and "bangs" and "this side"?

Apparently Korean straightening techniques are scary effective. I've seen the results first hand on female friends, so I think you won't be disappointed. Here's the hair-cutting vocab that I can remember.

머리 잘라 주세요 - Cut my hair, please.
너무 짧게 자르지 마세요. - Don't cut it too short, please.
이런 스타일로 해 주세요 - Do it in this style please (if you bring in a picture)
이 정도로 길게 / 짧게 - this long / short
5 인치만큼 길게 - 5 inches long
조금 더 짧게 - a little shorter
앞 머리 - hair in the front
옆 머리 - hair on the side
뒷 머리 - hair in the back
윗 머리 - hair on the top

yeah I second this - nice job javiskefka! I'm growing my hair out right now but whenever I want to get it trimmed, I'll need to know some hair salon/barbershop phrases/vocabulary.

I'm gonna add a few of the words for all of you.

I just want my hair trimmed a bit.
그냥 조금만 다듬어 주세요.

I want it layered.
층지게 해 주세요.
층을 내서 깎아 주세요.
레이어를 줘서 깎아 주세요.

I want my hair straight.
스트레이트 하고 싶어요.

I'd like to be more natural. (use this when you don't get satisfied. lol)
좀 더 자연스러웠으면 좋겠어요.

I don't want my whiskers removed.
구레나룻은 놔 두세요. (many people say wrong as 구렛나루)
귀 앞 머리는 밀지 마세요.

slightly : 살짝
perm : 파마
curl : 컬
wave : 웨이브
bang : 뱅, 뱅헤어
bleach : 블리치, 탈색
dyeing : 염색

머리 커트 송공~~ ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

the place we went to was pretty neat - there was a puppy running around and lots of korean magazines and kpop playing nonstop. it took my friend almost 4 hours to get her hair done, but we had fun.

the phrases came in very handy - the lady who cut my hair could barely speak english. she was very relieved when she realized we could still communicate (: it was really fun to get to talk to someone new in korean.

but, i look rather like 금잔디 from 꽃보다 남자 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ - i definitely got a korean style haircut. i guess that was to be expected. i don't dislike it, i'm just not used to it yet. we'll see what i think in the morning after i style it myself. ^^ (but honestly, anything would have looked better than before - i haven't had my hair cut since july!!!!!!!! oops..)

I know perm as 펌 and bangs as 앞머리 ...

I actually got my hair cut in 명동 last time (included a short shoulder massage ㅋㅋㅋ).
I went with my Korean cousin and she "translated" for me. I'm saying "translated" because my cousin doesn't speak English with me either ^^'.
Somehow it worked with a magazine and lots of hand movements...

Yes, or you might want to spare yourself this vocabulary and use the following technique which I have been using until I started learning Korean:

1. Bring a picture.
2. Say: 이거 주세요.
3. Whenever the hairdresser asks you something, just smile.

As for me, I always came with a picture of Brad Pitt. Which led me to say "브라드피트 주세요". ^^ And I was never dissatisfied with the outcome.

But you might as well go for the safe way and learn the vocabulary.

As for me, I think the two most IMPORTANT phrases I learned were...

1) 앞머리 너무 짧게 자르지 마세요 (Unfortunately this didn't work when I went to get my bangs trimmed a few days ago by a woman who spoke neither Korean nor English very well, so I ended up with "the Korean bangs" as my friends call it haha. 이주일동안 모자 쓰야겠다. ㅎㅎ)

2) The second one I forgot... but it had something to do with 숱 maybe? Basically, I used to ask them not to "thin out" the hair, which they always seemed to do... anyone know what this phrase might be? I'm not even sure what the proper English word is.
