Talking about Religion

Postby Chriss » December 26th, 2008 1:58 pm

I've been given the sentence "종교는 기독교입니다, " but it's too little information for me. So now I've got questions!

How would I specify who has the religion?
How would I say that I don't have a religion?
Do you have to "be" a religion in Korean as opposed to "having" one?
How open are Korean people about religion?

We can assume from that sentence that there's a context, so we know who the speaker is talking about. I.E. 저는 제프입니다. 종교는 기독교입니다.

The speaker could also have said, "저는 기독교인입니다" or "저는 그리스도인입니다" (그리스도인 comes from he Greek word for Christ + 인)

I don't know if you can say "종교는 없습니다" or not. You could say "무신론자입니다" (I'm an atheist).

You can say that.

종교는 없습니다.
종교가 없습니다.
저는 종교가 없습니다.
저에게는(제게는) 종교가 없습니다.
(저의) 종교는 무교입니다.
저는 무신론자입니다.

무교입니다 is more common than 무신론자입니다 however.

I believe that. I knew there was a word for having no religion that was simpler than 4 words, but I couldn't remember it.
