(으)세요 conjugation

Postby nosaj100 » September 29th, 2008 3:00 pm

안녕하세요!

I have a quick question. I have been working on the honorific form. I can't understand why:

부르다 conjugates to 부르세요, 부르셨어요,and 부르실 거예요.

I thought that when the 르 meets a vowel another ㄹ is added to the preceding consonant. I thought I would get something like 불라세요, 불라셨어요, and 불라실 거예요.

I think there is an easy answer, but I just can't figure it out! Thanks in advance for the help!

i think it's because in this case, you're adding the honorifix infix 시 so you are conjugating the 시 and not the 으.

i probably can't explain how to use 시 very well, but when you use it, you don't conjugate the verb you are adding it to, you just use the verb stem (basically, drop the 다). the 시 adds more respect to a statement or question.

so in your example, 부르다 + 시 becomes 부르(verb stem) + 시(honorific infix) + 어(to conjugate, because 시 ends in 이) + 요 or 부르세요

maybe someone can explain 시 better?

but i hope that helps you to understand why it is conjugated that way ^^

Yes, holdfast is right.

The 르다 > ㄹㄹV change only happens when you suffix (and remember, these are all suffixes) the augmenting vowel for informal present tense, the augmenting vowel for past tense -았/었/였, and the causal -V서 suffix. All other suffixes do not trigger this change.

I also think Emily's explanation was perfect.

부르다 is '르' irregular verb and conjugates when 아/어 comes after it.

부르면
부르고
부르지
불러서
불러

아: 가르다, 고르다, 나르다, 다르다, 마르다, 바르다, 사르다, 모르다, 자르다, 조르다, etc.
어: 거르다, 구르다, 기르다, 누르다, 두르다, 무르다, 부르다, 지르다, 흐르다, etc.
