주차금지(juchakeumji) means "No Parking" in Korean.

주차(jucha) = parking
금지(geumji) = prohibition

And 아디다스 is "Adidas"



But what's funny about this photo is the little phrase handwritten at the top of it.


"건들지 마!" Can you read it? (geondeulji ma!)



I don't know who wrote it, but ...

It means "Leave me alone!!"

I took this photo in 대학로(dae hak ro) a few months back.

아디다스's "스" is the closest sound to the English "S" sound as in "books",

so books becomes "북스" if you write it in Korean.

Yeah, it does, but in a different sense.


Please think about the difference between the "S" sound in books,

and the "Soo" sound in "Soup" or "Sudan".


The Korean "스" is often the means to write "S",

but a complete Korean letter must always have at least one consonant and one vowel.


Therefore, Korean people cannot pronounce the "ㅅ"

as the sound "스" .


You need a vowel following "ㅅ" to make Korean people understand what sound it will be. Because it could be 사(sa) 소(so) 수(su) 세(se) 서(seo) or 스(seu), or many other things, depending on what vowel follows right next.

I see. What I can't understand is why they wouldn't pronounce it like "seu" then. Adidaseu. Is it understood that the vowel should be written but left out in pronunciation?

Maybe you don't know japanese but is it like in japanese you put "su" to write s in forreign words?

To express "S" Japanese need to say す(su)

but Koreans say 스(seu).

For those of us living in Korea who don't know Korean very well, I think we need to pay attention whenever there's a sign that ends with 금지...cause we might be doing something we're not supposed to

Other examples I can think of are 출입금지 (off limits/no entry) and 흡연금지 (no smoking)
