I wonder what the pronunciation difference is between

ㅗ\ㅓ

ㄱ\ㅋ : ㄱ is softer so it is more like a "g" whereas ㅋ is definitely a hard "k", ㄲ is somewhere in between.
ㅜ\ㅡ : 우 is like "soup" (round mouth", both 으 and 이 can be said with teeth together so 으 we affectionately called the "gut slash" because it closely resembles the sound one might make if punched in the stomach; and 이 is simply a long E.
ㅗ\ㅓ 오 is a long O, again round mouth, and 어 sounds more like a short U as in "up". I don't know if that helps...

It seems that those vowels like to be stuck to a consonant unless they are being used in an emoticon but the only one I know is ㅠ_ㅠ and this is nothing to cry about. I think that the consonants can hang out by themselves without looking odd but the vowels just need that place holder. 현우, when are you going to add to that emoticon thread?
