Anti-bot measures

Postby steved » February 20th, 2008 2:40 pm

I know that I am stating the obvious but the board keeps getting spammed. There are some MODs that can be implemented to help prevent this. The easiest is probably an anti-bot question used on registration. Here is a link to the phpBB forum thread for such a MOD for version 3.0: http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=645075. There is also some discussion over there about how most of these spammers addresses are from *.ru so there could be a way to block those domains...

Dear Steve, Bouks, and everyone else:

We're extremely sorry about what happened to the forum the last week or so. We have banned the user's IP address and we should now be alright from here on out!

Again, apologies for the late action.

Keith-ssi, no problem, we know you've probably got a million things to do. Did all that spamming come from one IP address? Sheesh.

We have some mods lying around that would help stop spammers, but they would be a fairly big inconvenience to valid new posters. So we'll see how well this ban works out. If it continues to be a problem, we'll take more direct means to keep spammers off.

Wonderful. Maybe a CAPTCHA thrown into the registration process?

Anyway, thanks for the hard work, Jason. You sure have a lot of posts. There must be some secret section where all of you staffers are plotting the future of our favorite Korean learning website. Keep up the good work!
