Chinese Characters in Korean

Hi

I have read in a number of spots that even after Hangul was created that Chinese characters were still in use along side Hangul. I also read that most of this was phased out in the 90's for the most part.

For lets say a high school education level is there any Chinese characters that are still in use for a high school level graduate that isn't pursuing some higher level university degree that might have some things that still require Chinese?

Or if a person learns Hangul is he/she pretty much all set without much issue now that most cases seemed to have been phased out in regards to Chinese character usage?

Hi Dave,

Thanks for posting. There are Chinese character (한문) classes for junior and high school students at school(while it was mandatory in the past, it is a selective class these days), where they learn the grammatical structure and the Chinese characters (as they used to be included in local newspapers, until the early 2000's.) However, as everything is written in Hangul these days, (newspaper articles included), if you know how to write the words in Hangul, you will probably have no problem.

Thanks again. I know my wife's Japanese and I gave up trying to learn Kanji just way to much to learn HA HA so wasn't looking forward to learning Chinese HA HA glad to know Hangul will pretty much get it done for the most part!

Hi Dave,

You're welcome! It is actually easier to learn Chinese characters in Korean as they are pronounced a 'certain' way, whereas in Japanese the pronunciation of the 'kanji' changes upon the word. Rest assured, however, that even if you learn the words only in Korean/Hangul, you'll have no trouble.

I would say the average Korean knows the Chinese characters for numbers and the days of the week. Beyond that, it'll just depend on what they remember from their classes.
