Hey long time no see.

There are a lot of meanings and uses for both of these so it is not surprising that you are confused.

Here are a couple of common meanings and uses:

데 is often used as part of a conjunction and to mean "but" or "and/ and there is more" ㅓ ㅣ 데 is used
그런데 -by the way, but
했는데 -did it but
맞는데 -it's right but
데 can also mean a place as in 아무데나 -anyplace

대 is sometimes used to indicate a quotation in place of '다고 하다' i.e. someone said ㅏ ㅣ 대 is used
창석이 그랬대요 -Changseok said that it was like that.
가지 말라고 했대 -he told me not to go

대 can be found in some words just as a matter of spelling rule, like 그대로 -as it is, as it stands
대 also means:
*large or big 대 세일 -big sale
*a generation 세대
*a counting unit for cars, motorcycles 자동차 한 대, 두 대, 세 대 etc.
*counting unit of having a smoke 탐배 한 대

I would first like to thank trutherous for really great answer!

As he had mentioned, ~데 could mean in a various way depending on what comes in the front.

It could be used as and, but, or even the ending when you are reluctant to say something.

On the other hand, ~대 shows more of the second hand. When you have heard something or so, for example 'Amy said she would go for shopping' then you could say '에이미 시장보러간대.'.

So the sound is almost the same but the usage or the meaning could vary a lot depending on how it gets combined with other sentences and subjectives or so.
