Hangul 한글!

Postby JockZon » August 13th, 2007 10:46 am

Talking about Korean, we should all learn how to write and read. if you are a newbie like me, check out these sites. You are welcome to contribute with more sites and tips as well! Make this our official thread about the writing system of Korea.

About Hangul:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hangul
http://www.omniglot.com/writing/korean.htm
http://langintro.com/kintro/toc.htm

Hangul on the computer:
If you want to be able to type hangul on the computer, beware. You have to learn an entirely new layout!

Here is a picture of the layout: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keyboard_l ... _Korean.29

How to type in korean on Windows XP:
Start -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages

Be sure that "Install file f or East Asian languages" is checked under "Supplemental language support." You'll need your Windows XP CD for this. Once you've clicked apply your computer are going to install the necessary files for the East Asian language support. If you don't have a CD-ROM you CANNOT do this.

Once you've finished, be sure you've got the language bar appearing on the screen. If not, right click on the task bar, choose toolbars -> Language bar.

Now click on the down arrow on the language bar and choose settings. Click add and choose input language. Click OK, and OK again, and you are now able to choose korean from the drop down list.

I see. (그렇군요)

Sweden is written "스웨덴" in Korean.
(스웨덴은 "스웨덴"이라고 써요.)

And I'm from Korea, obviously... ㅋㅋㅋ

Once you've installed the Korean keyboard on your system, you can always
click on the little triangle next to the (KO) box at the right-handed bottom
of the page and make a keyboard guide appear, but if you want something
bigger and clearer than that, here you go!

Click on the links to see the bigger images!! ^_^

And if you want something more printer-friendly, here you are.

JockZon,

Thank you very much for the site "langintro". I'm going thru the explanations right now and now hangul is really starting to make sense.

I would thank you in Korean if I knew how to do so.
