"젓" 과 "젓갈"?

"젓" 과 "젓갈" 은 어떤 차이가 있나요...?

Hopefully Tim will be along soon to clear this up. I never really thought about it before. It seems like most of the Korean ladies I know always say "젓갈," rather than just "젓" The dictionary seems to indicate both terms are interchangeable, but I wonder if "젓갈" is the generic term for all salt pickled fish products, while "젓" is used after a specific fish product name to identify it as salt pickled, such as "새우젓," 멸치젓," "오징어젓" 등등. .... Then again, the term "젓" might not often be used by itself because it can so easily be confused with similar sounding words such as "젖?" :lol: .. I shudder to think of some 아줌마들 in our church making kimchi together and one turns to the other and says "젓 좀 이리줘" :lol:

Hello guys.

I've never thought about the difference between 젓 and 젓갈.

Right! George is explaining it correctly.

젓 is the pickled fish products and 젓갈 is the food using 젓 in the dictionary.

we usually say 새우젓, 멸치젓, 까나리젓 . . . not 새우젓갈, 멸치젓갈, 까나리젓갈.

But when we call all together, we say "젓갈". For example, 젓갈 샀어?

그렇군요... :) 처음엔 그런 생각을 안해봤는데 지금 생각해보니..."젖"...ㅋㅋㅋ
