Postby timandyou » October 25th, 2010 9:21 am

A. Key Vocabulary
Please translate the following vocabulary into Korean.
Example - 1. "where" : hint (eo-di)
어(eo) + 디(di) = 어디(eo-di)

2. "where at": hint (eo-di-e-seo)

3. "Myung-Dong" : hint (Myeong-dong)
명(Myeong) + 동(dong) =
4. "Migliore" : hint (Mil-il-o-re)
밀(mil) + 리(li) + 오(o) + 레(re) =
5. "shopping" : hint (sso-ping)

6. "today" : hint (o-neul)

7. "there" : hint (geo-gi)

8. "meal" : hint (bab)

B. Lesson Focus
The focus of this lesson is about 에서 (e-seo), meaning "at," "in," or "from."
The particle 에서 (e-seo) marks the location of an action, and it also marks a spatial or a temporal point of departure.
Example - 1. "where at" : hint (eo-di-e-seo)
어(eo) + 디(di) + 에(e) + 서(seo) = 어디에서 (eo-di-e-seo)

2. "in Korea" : hint (han-guk-e-seo)

3. "in Seoul" : hint (seo-ul-e-seo)

4. "in here" : hint (yeo-gi-e-seo)

5. "at there" : hint (jeo-gi-e-seo)

6. "in Myung-Dong" : hint (myeong-dong-e-seo)

7. "at Migliore" : hint (mil-li-o-re-e-seo)

C. Test yourself
Please translate the following into Korean.
Example - 1. "Where shall we meet today?" : hint (O-neul-eun eo-di-e-seo man-nal-kka?)
오늘은 (o-neul-eun) 어디에서 (eo-di-e-seo) 만날까? (man-nal-kka?) = 오늘은 어디에서 만날까?

2. "Where do you work (at)?" : hint (Eo-di-e-seo il-hap-nikka?)

3. "Let's see each other in Korea." : hint (Han-guk-e-seo bo-ja.)

4. "Shall we eat a meal (in) here?" : hint (Yeo-gi-e-seo bab-eul meok-eul-kka?)

5. "No, let's have a meal (at) there." : hint (A-ni, jeo-gi-e-seo bab-eul meok-ja.)

If you answer them in Korean, that's PERFECT!
If you answer them in Romanization, that's good too.
Reply this post then, I will kindly assist and give you the answers.
여러분 힘 내세요~~! Don't give up guys~~!
Cheers, Tim

Practice 17

Postby bjonale » October 29th, 2010 7:01 pm

쇼핑 shopping
오늘 today
거기 there
밥 meal

B. Lesson focus:

한국에서
서울에서
여기에서
저기에서
명동에서
밀리오레에서

C. Test yourself:

어디에서일합니까?
한국에서보자.
여기에서 밥먹을까? In the practice sentences, for a statement , “을” came after “밥” (밥을먹습니다), but in the question, it comes after “먹”. Does it matter, or can it be after either in a statement or a question?
아니,저기에서밥먹자.

Tim, I have listened to some of the newbie season lessons, and beginner season 1, but this is the first time I have applied myself…I really like these practice lessons. Doing the 숙제 really reinforces the lessons, and helps me remember the words, and how to spell them. Thank you again for taking the time to correct the lessons! Palapala

question

Postby bjonale » November 1st, 2010 5:48 pm

Under "test yourself" I had a question about the placement of "을". Could you explain that to me please? Thanks!

Hello Palapala,
About your question, I think you are going too deep.

Anyway... I will explain,
The English sentence is... "Shall we eat a meal (in) here?" : hint (Yeo-gi-e-seo bab meok-eul-kka?)
in Korean, 여기에서 우리 밥(을) 먹을까?

I SEE!!! I made you confused! "을" is omitted there! (I am really sorry!)
The correct sentence is 여기에서 우리 밥을 먹을까? Yes! you would need '을' after 밥 since 밥 is OBJECT. As you said, 밥을 먹다, 밥을 먹습니다...

Okay, now let's talk about '을' between 먹 and 까 (먹을까).
This '을' has nothing to do with 'object particle.
Here is the changes of verb, "to eat"

The standard of "to eat" is 먹다. and it becomes 먹습니다, 먹겠습니다, 먹었다, 먹자, 먹을까, efc..
One thing you might notice here is that '먹' is never changed! That's right, 먹 is as we called "verb-stem".
anyway... let's simply talk about 먹을까.

verb-stem + ㄹ까? means "shall we?"

For examples, "to do" is 하다. 하 is 'verb-stem' and, 하 + ㄹ까 becomes 할까, which means "shall we do (it)?"
"to see" is 보다. 보 is 'verb-stem' and, 보 + ㄹ까 becomes 볼까, which means "shall we see (it)?"
"to eat" is 먹다. 먹 is 'verb-stem' and, 먹 + 을까 becomes 먹을까, which means "shall we eat?"

Sorry that I made you confused.
먹을까? is "shall we eat?"
and you need '을' (object particle) right after '밥', so it becomes 밥을.

Thank you for letting me know my mistake.
You are such a GREAT student!
cheers,
