Postby bardofages7604 » September 28th, 2010 6:48 pm

Ok, the more I study Korean and talk with people the more I hear 는/은데, but I have not had a lesson about it yet. I'm into Beginner Season 3, but I can't find a lesson that deals with it. Can someone point me in the right direction? Either explain how 는/은데 works and is translated or tell me which lessons deal with this grammar point! I would greatly appreciate it!!

BTW we recently had a post regarding your current question: http://www.koreanclass101.com/forum/vie ... php?t=2494

Postby timandyou » September 29th, 2010 12:49 am

This is Tim.
KoreanClass101.com은 다 좋은데 Julia가 너무 조용해요...
KoreanClass101.com은 다 좋은데 trutherous과 Dr.Sean이 서로 싸워요...

Tim.
(Julia, Sean, George...)

Julia is here.:D

Tim~~! You missed 조지 님's mistake.
-은데, -데 is like "BUT" in English.

So you can't use -은데 in this sentence.

lol lol lol

Since I have asked this question and received the answers I have started picking up on how 는/은 데 is used. So for the sake of my sanity I'm going to put it out here in my simplified terms that I used to remember it and make sure I've got all my bases covered.

1. It is used as "but" in the sense of 'point' but 'counterpoint'.
2. Not used as "but" in the sense of 'point' but 'supportive point' or 'unrelated point'.
3. It is used as a "hanger" in the sense of 'point' but...

So in an English understanding sense it is to be used a lot more like 'however'? Used to show differentiation as opposed to a shift in conversation.

This seems to be a complex point, so any more correction/clarification would be appreciated as always!

Julia Julia Juila; Tim doesn't 'miss' mistakes -- He is kind enough to overlook them once in a while...

The above are two examples I ran across by chance in the multitude of study I did throughout the day. I apologize for the ominous sounding nature of the sentences --they're excerpts from the Gospel of Luke, 13th chapter, of the "modern persons bible" (현대인의 성경).
