Recommended Korean Textbooks

Hello everyone,
i was just wondering, are there any textbooks out there that someone could recommend to complement the KClass program?

I found the Genki series for Japanese to be indispensible alongside JPod, for times when I couldn't use my iPod (studying in class ) and I really liked the format that the textbook used.

Anyhow, your suggestions, please.

There are a handful of good books out there..but In my opinion they are all in Korea!

I live in Canada but could probably find a way to order your ideal textbook. There are several Korean bookstores around, they may be able to order them.

The one that really helped me when I first got here is "Survial Korean" by Stephen Revere.. there's another book by that title on Amazon, but that's not it.

Now there are a few titles in that series, 2 by Stephen Revere, and the third is actually more of a dictionary/glossary. Both of Stephen's books are well made and will help you to learn some common grammar points and vocabulary. The first one has a green cover. The like KClass podcasts, the dialogs follow one particular character through his adventures in Seoul.

Using Klear now too, the first book. Being a complete newbie though I find it hard as a self study because there are no answers available. If you get the Klear book the audio is online in Real Audio format as well as MP3 format. Anyone using the Beginner book want to form an online study group to check answers together?

I was using Sogang University textbook previously and its really good.

But my school then changed the textbook to Kyunghee University's. I can't really adapt to this change because I'm used to the Sogang books, which is why I stopped learning at the school I was with.

Sogang's textbooks are good cuz they have English translations to their grammar and vocab. Kyunghee's don't have those which makes it necessary to have a teacher by your side. =(

These two are great if you live in Korea....

I just picked them up last night. Really well done. There isn't a lick of English in them at all, so you do need to be a fairly competent reader (or just really good with a dictionary) Each lesson introduces a phrase in a dialog, and then proceed to teach you the meaning in a few different situations...all in Korean. You will learn alternatives to the common phrases as well as opposite meanings. They will periodically reuse a phrase taught in an earlier part to reinforce it.

There are actually 3 in the series. I bought the 속담 (proverbs) and 관용어 (idioms) books. There is also one based on 한자 phrases.





I found them at Kyobo. If you're in Korea... I HIGHLY recommend them to improve your natural, native sounding Korean! Using phrases like these is what separates native-sounding speakers from everyone else! From a teaching/learning standpoint, I think they are among the most well-written books I've seen!

Just one example..each book has about 60!: ... 귀가 얇다 (literally means that your ears are thin)

But if you say this about someone, it means that they believe everything they hear.

I would love to buy that entire series when I get the money for it, but there are a lot of books, and I don't know the order. There are also the workbooks and teacher's manuals. Do you know the order that they are supposed to go in?

I tried to dowload the mp3s from the KLEAR website. I started with intermediate 1 just to see level-wise where I was. The sentences seemed good and clear. I didn't get the impression that the audio was meant to stand on its own; it is designed to be used with the workbooks. I think a motivated person could learn a lot from just the audio though. The file server was very slow though and timed out several times before I was able to get the complete zip file so I haven't tried to download any of the more advanced audios yet. When I find what level workbook to get via the free audio files I will probably get the workbook through abebooks.

The author was my first Korean professor ever. She used to use stories that would eventually make it into the book in class. It's great to see someone recommending her work. I'll have to let her know what a good reputation her book has .

My favorite was 홍길동.

That's awesome. I can tell that she must have been pretty good! I'm thrilled to know that there is an intermediate book as well. I'll add it to my list of things to buy!
