미처 ...

Postby joesp » June 6th, 2010 1:06 pm

미처 피할 사이도 없이 자동차와 부딪쳤다.

미처 usually mens up until that time (e.g. 미처 몰랐다 I never knew) but it doesn't work like that here ..

thanks.

Same meaning, different thinking, instead of translating the words into English in your mind if you think like a Korean it makes perfect sense. What does the sentence 미처 피할 사이도 없이 자동차와 부딪쳤다. mean without 미처?

피할 사이도 없이 자동차와 부딪쳤다. - I could not escape/avoid colliding with the car.

Let's replace 'up until' with 'even to the point of/to the extent of' and see what happens.

Even to the point of being unable to escape, I collided with the car.

I was absolutely unable to avoid the accident.

Well, that's my take on it.

"미처" ~~할 시간도 없이...

Postby timandyou » June 7th, 2010 1:21 am

:P

Wonderful, wonderful, and wonderful~~!!

Korean people often use this expression - "미처 ~~할 시간도 없이..."

Josep wrote an example, "미처 피할 시간도 없이..."

It's a great phrase to know - "미처 ~~할 시간도 없이.."
I want you to practice this phrase often. It sounds so natural and so good.

For other examples,
"미처 밥먹을 시간도 없이..."
"미처 웃을 시간도 없이.."
"미처 옷을 입을 시간도 없이..."
"미처 문을 닫을 시간도 없이..."
and much more...

I hope you got the meaning throuhgout the examples above.
"미처 ~~도 할 수 없었다"
미처 피할 수도 없었다. After "미처", there is negative form "-도 없다(없었다)"

"미처" means 'not have enough time for the following action/verb'

I hope my expression/comment/thought help you understand.
Thanks Josep and George~~~!!! 8)

그 만큼이라도 없다. 어떤 한계를 닿을 수 없다. 하고, 아직.

아마, '그런 시간조차도 없다'도 가능한 것 같아요.

imho.
