Advanced Conversation

Postby trutherous » February 15th, 2010 5:51 pm

I would really love to 'listen in" on some advanced conversation, specifically conversations where levels of respect are mixed in the same sentences. I find this the most difficult part of speaking Korean naturally.

For example, when speaking with a coworker where we are not yet on an intimate level but both of us are the same age and status, so we are using a middle-level of respect, yet in the course of the same conversation we talk about his parents and what they are doing, and then talk about the antics of his new puppy.

I find no difficulty speaking up to an elder in high respect language or speaking to an equal in middle-respect terms, likewise speaking to a child in intimate terms is not a problem, but mixing these levels naturally in the same conversation drives me nuts. I guess only exposure and practice over time will develop this skill but I guess what I am asking for is more exposure.

Thanks - George
