"can you tell?"

Postby iDoof » May 10th, 2010 2:03 am

Is there a general Korean translation for the phrase "can you tell?"

..as in, "I just got a haircut, can you tell?"
or "I'm not a good writer, can you tell?"

Or an audio cue, "I kind of have an accent, can you tell?"

Much appreciated^^. You guys are great.

I don't get the exact meanings but I guess it from the context...

어때요? or 괜찮아요?

I'm just a beginner, so what I'm about to tell you might not sound natural to a Korean. But if I had to construct a sentence that way, I think I would just put "그렇지?" at the end. In English it usually translates to "Right?", "isn't it?", etc.

This may or may not fit every instance where you want to use the English "can you tell?", but I think it could come in handy. In your example sentences I think it would sound okay at the end of "I'm not a good writer", but might not sound correct at the end of a sentence like "I just got a haircut." But I could/would still use it to make myself understood.

Not the usual usage, but below you will find a close to literal translation:

알아보다 - recognize, identify, judge, appreciate

I got a hair cut ~~알아볼 수 있어요? (can you tell)

I got a hair cut ~~알아보겠어요? (can you tell)
