Hello Jarie,
That is indeed a good quesiton!
Think one thing that is about a language, is quite hard to make it straight as the people always use it and it happens to be changed as colloquial.
So how do you know when ㄹ, ㅅ would sound differently will be quite confusing even to standardize but to listen more words and sentences, you will grasp naturally.
But to give you a little tip for ㄹ,ㅅ, usually when ㄹ becomes batchim, that's when it sounds like R. In other cases, most likely L.
For ㅅ, it tends to sound as SH when it comes with complicated vowels such as ㅟ,ㅖ,ㅕ,...
How batchim sound would change depending on what comes before and after, you could find a video as we have 5 rules for batchim.

You will get a clearer view on that when you watch this video!;)
Let us know if there is anything you feel still confused and would like to ask further!:)
Thank you

There's an error in the PDF on page 2:
원피스가 너무 커요.
wonpiseu-ga neomu keoyo.
"My dress is too pig."
maybe it's supposed to say BIG?

how do u know whether the ㄹis pronounced as r or l in certain words?
how do u know whether the ㅅis pronounced as a s or sh?
is there a way?
also if the ㅅ is in batchim is it always a t sound and if ㅅ is in batchim and next syllable is a ㅇ, it replaces it rght so does the sound stay as t or just s?
