Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다. |
Keith: Keith here. Welcome everybody to KoreanClass101.com’s how to read and write Korean video series. This video is our third in our series. And, Seol, can you give us a little recap of what we did in our first two videos? |
Seol: We ran over the consonants and vowels in our first video. In our second video, we went over the simplest way to make a word in Korean with one consonant and one syllable. |
Keith: Yep and continuing our series, this video our third should bring you one step closer to learning how to read and write Korean. In our last video, we went over words that had one consonant and one vowel and we learned how to make the simplest words. Today we are going to add one more consonant. All right, let’s get started. To get started, we are going to go over a few Koreanized English words. First we have the consonant. |
Seol: ㄴ |
Keith: And now the vowel |
Seol: ㅠ |
Keith: This syllabic block makes the sound |
Seol: 뉴. |
Keith: Now we are going into one consonant, one vowel and one more consonant. First we have |
Seol: ㅇ and this doesn’t have any sound value. |
Keith: Yeah so the vowel that comes next will be the first sound of this syllabic block. |
Seol: ㅛ |
Keith: And lastly we have |
Seol: ㄱ |
Keith: In the last position. So the sound we now get is |
Seol: 욕. |
Keith: And, Seol, what are these two together? |
Seol: 뉴욕. |
Keith: And if you can guess what this is, you will get an Apple. |
Seol: Yeah. New York. |
Keith: Okay sorry. Okay so next we have |
Seol: ㅋ |
Keith: Followed by |
Seol: ㅓ |
Keith: And lastly |
Seol: ㄹ, 컬. |
Keith: Our next syllable, we have |
Seol: ㄹ |
Keith: Again and now the vowel |
Seol: ㅓ |
Keith: And what’s that together |
Seol: 컬러. |
Keith: And what does this mean? |
Seol: Color. |
Keith: Color yeah. All right and now our last Koreanized English word. Here we have |
Seol: ㅂ |
Keith: Followed by |
Seol: ㅗ |
Keith: And now |
Seol: ㄱ |
Keith: So this is |
Seol: 복 |
Keith: Our next syllabic block starts with |
Seol: ㅅ |
Keith: And now |
Seol: ㅣ |
Keith: This is followed by |
Seol: ㅇ |
Keith: All right. Let’s pause here for a bit. When we had ㅇ in 뉴욕 it had no sound value. |
Seol: That’s because it was in the first position. |
Keith: Right and now that it’s in the last position, it sounds like the English ng. So what’s the sound that we have |
Seol: 싱. |
Keith: Right. You hear that ng? 싱. So what are these two together? |
Seol: 복싱. |
Keith: And this means boxing. All right, now for the Korean words, first we have |
Seol: ㅇ |
Keith: No sound value. It’s in the first position. The vowel is |
Seol: ㅏ |
Keith: And now we have |
Seol: ㄴ |
Keith: And this is |
Seol: 안. |
Keith: All right, our next syllabic block starts with |
Seol: ㄴ |
Keith: And the vowel is |
Seol: ㅕ |
Keith: And now for |
Seol: ㅇ |
Keith: Which has a ng like sound when it’s in the last position. So what is this? |
Seol: 녕. |
Keith: And the word is |
Seol: 안녕. |
Keith: Right and this is a great word to know. It means hey or see ya. It’s a really casual way to say hi or bye. All right next we have |
Seol: ㅇ |
Keith: No sound again and |
Seol: ㅓ |
Keith: And now we have |
Seol: ㅁ |
Keith: And the sound is |
Seol: 엄. |
Keith: Okay. Our next syllabic block. |
Seol: ㅁ |
Keith: And now |
Seol: ㅏ |
Keith: And this is |
Seol: 마. |
Keith: And what is this together? |
Seol: 엄마. |
Keith: Seol, what do you call your mom? |
Seol: 엄마. |
Keith: Really? |
Seol: Yeah. |
Keith: Well I shortened it. I just say 마. |
Seol: Really? |
Keith: Yeah. I say hey mom, hungry. All right, let’s move on. Our last word starts with |
Seol: ㅎ. |
Keith: And now |
Seol: ㅏ |
Keith: And our last consonant. |
Seol: ㄴ |
Keith: And this is |
Seol: 한. |
Keith: Our next syllabic block starts with |
Seol: ㄱ |
Keith: And now we have |
Seol: ㅡ |
Keith: And now it ends with |
Seol: ㄹ |
Keith: And what is this |
Seol: 글. |
Keith: And if you put these two together, it’s |
Seol: 한글. |
Keith: And this is exactly what you guys are reading. This is written Korean. Our last segment is a review. Seol, can you explain what the viewers will have to do? |
Seol: First we will give them the words and then they will have three seconds to read the word. |
Keith: Great. So here we go. |
Seol: 뉴욕. 컬러. 복싱. 안녕. 엄마. 한글. |
Keith: All right, that’s going to do it. Thanks for watching our third video on how to read and write Korean. Be sure to stop by KoreanClass101.com and leave us a post. Seol, let’s say bye using one of the vocabulary words we used today. |
Seol: 안녕. |
Keith: 안녕. |

Thanks for posting.
Usually, when one learns the various Hangul syllables, you will also learn the romanization of each syllable. Having said that, you will know that 엄 is romanized as eon and 마 as ma, and you put it together as eom-ma/eomma. Romanization can sometimes get confusing for some people, however, and some opt to learn Korean without relying on romanization due to such confusion. Having said that, to avoid confusion, maybe you may want to write the romanization initially with a dash in between each syllable--you can omit them once you are comfortable enough.
Hope this was of help. Please let us know if you have any other inquiries.
Best,
Lyn

hello, i have a question to ask.
so, this might seem like an obvious answer to this question, but i'm still trying to learn hangul and i want to make sure that i don't get it wrong.
like how you guys showed eomma in one of your videos, how do you know that 엄 will mean eom? and that 마 will mean ma?
sorry if this didn't make sense.

Hey there,
video - or lesson - nr. 3 here in How to read and write Hangul also works or doesn't work like at Linda's - maybe it's just an internet problem, because as i clicked on "Download video" it works well.
So Linda, try to download the video instead - it might work.
I also recommend the Hana Hana Hangul video series, i LOVED them :)

Hey Linda and Rosie,

Linda - we really apologize for what is going on and would you please kindly explain your situation to (contactus@koreanclass101.com)? I am sure your issue will be responded quickly!

Rosie - may we ask what level would you be on? For absolute beginners, we usually recommend hana hana hangul series. But even if you are upper, it also helps as you revisit the alphabets before further proceeding your learning! That is also another reason we provide 7-days free trial period of premium account when you join us so you could explore and see what fits you! Please give us more information on your Korean backgrounds and would love to give you some tips!:)

Thank you

I kinda get confused, don't which to start first. I meant it would be much better if u tell where to start and where to follow, e.x start with absolute beginner video lesson, then go to absolute beginner audio lessons, and then absolute grammar. Give me a guide, please. I like the lessons so far anyway.
I was able to get Lessons 1 and 2 without any problem but 3 just has a circle forming and reforming. Help!
