Kyejin: 안녕하세요 김계진입니다.

Jaehwi: 이재휘입니다.! Welcome back to KoreanClass101.com! Tell Us Your Thoughts in Korean.

Kyejin: 이번 레슨에서는 어떤 내용을 배우나요?

Jaehwi: In this lesson, you’ll learn the expressions using the word 생각 meaning “thoughts”

Kyejin: 이번 레슨의 대화는 우형씨와 그의 직장 상사 사이의 대화입니다.

Jaehwi: The conversation takes place at Woohyung’s workplace and it’s between him and his boss.

Kyejin: Woohyung will use formal Korean, and his boss will use informal Korean.

Jaehwi: Let's listen to the conversation.

POST CONVERSATION BANTER

Jaehwi: 이번 레슨의 대화에서는 우형씨가 부장님과 휴가 일정에 대해 이야기를 나누고 있었는데요. How do Koreans use their day off?

Kyejin: 한국인들이 휴일을 보내는 방법은 크게 두가지로 나눌수 있습니다. 첫째는 오래전부터 그 휴일을 기다리며 계획을 세워놓는 사람들입니다. 이런 경우에는 다른 도시나 제주도 같은 휴양지로 여행을 가기도 하고, 시간이 많지 않을 때에는 당일치기 one-day trip 으로 여행을 가기도 하구요.

Jaehwi: Yes, Korea is not a big country, and you can basically go anywhere within a day. But I suppose that causes horrible traffic.

Kyejin: 그래요. 그래서 3일연휴 three day weekend 같은 경우에는 많은 사람들이 한꺼번에 도시를 빠져나오기 때문에 고속도로 교통체증이 심할 때가 많습니다.

Jaehwi: I don’t want to spend my day off in a traffic jam. What about people like me who don’t want to take a trip, but just spend time in a city?

Kyejin: 이게 싫은 사람들은 가까운 곳으로 등산을 가거나, 간단한 나들이, 아니면 극장이나 야구 경기장에 가기도 합니다. 특히 서울의 경우 근처에 산이 많기 때문에 간단하게 등산 hiking 을 할 수 있어요.

Jaehwi: 계진씨는 어떻게 휴가를 보내는 편이세요?

Kyejin: 저는 평소에는 별로 휴가를 쓰지 않다가 아예 해외로 여행을 나가는 스타일이에요. 아무래도 한국에 있는 여러 도시들은 한 번씩 가봤기 때문에 일본이나 중국과 같이 가까운 나라로 여행을 하는 게 좋거든요.

Jaehwi: I see. That’s right. Actually you can easily find flights for reasonable prices even for a three-day weekend, so many people just take a trip outside of Korea. Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES

Jaehwi: Let's take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s the first word?

Kyejin: 근속휴가

Jaehwi: bonus vacation time for those who work many consecutive years at one company

Kyejin: ‘근속'은 ‘계속 일하다'라는 뜻이고, ‘휴가'는 vacation 이라는 뜻입니다. 한 회사에서 쉬지 않고 계속 일했을때 “근속”이란 표현을 쓰는데요, 10년이나 20년 동안 계속 한 회사에서 일했을 때 ‘근속휴가'를 받을 수 있습니다.

Jaehwi: In Korean companies, the longer you stay at one company, the more benefits you get. So “근속 휴가” means bonus vacation time you receive in recognition of your long service.

Kyejin: 네. 그리고 ‘근속'이라는 단어가 들어간 표현 중에 “근속 년수”가 있는데요. 이것은 “한 회사에서 연속하서 일한 시간, 년수 number of years” 를 뜻합니다.

Jaehwi: 그리고 ‘근속수당'이라는 것도 있죠?

Kyejin: 맞아요. 휴가뿐 아니라 한 회사를 오래 다니면 ‘수당' bonus 를 받는 경우도 있는데요, 이걸 ‘근속수당'이라고 부릅니다.

Jaehwi: 또 한 회사에서 오래 일한 사람들을 “장기 근속자”라고 부릅니다. ‘장기'는 for a long time 이라는 의미구요. 자, 그럼 ‘근속’이라는 단어를 사용한 예문 살펴볼까요?

Kyejin: 내년에 20년 근속 휴가를 쓸 수 있다.

Jaehwi: I can get bonus vacation time next year because it’s my 20th anniversary at the company.

Kyejin: 그는 장기 근속으로 표창을 받았다.

Jaehwi: He was honored in recognition of his long service. 다음 단어는 뭔가요?

Kyejin: 피크 시즌

Jaehwi: Peak season/ busiest season

Kyejin: 피크 시즌은 영어단어에서 온 말인데요. 영어 단어의 의미 그대로 “가장 바쁜 시기”를 뜻합니다. 주로 일이 가장 많은 시기를 이렇게 부르죠. 또 다른 의미로 사람들이 가장 휴가를 많이 가는 시즌을 부르기도 합니다.

Jaehwi: “피크시즌”의 한국말인 “성수기”라는 표현도 많이 쓰이는 표현이죠? “성수기” is a Korean word for “peak season,” and “성수기” is also widely used. 예문 살펴볼까요?

Kyejin: 우리 호텔은 7월이 피크 시즌입니다.

Jaehwi: July is the peak season for our hotel.

Kyejin: 성수기라 비행기 표가 너무 비싸다.

Jaehwi: Plane tickets are very expensive because it’s the peak season. 그러면 “peak season” 의 반대인 “slow season/ off season” 이란 의미를 가진 단어도 있나요?

Kyejin: 물론 있어요. “비성수기” 라는 단어를 사용합니다.

Jaehwi: Literally ‘non-peak season’ 이라는 뜻이죠?

Kyejin: 또는 간단히 “비수기”라고 하시면 됩니다. “비”는 한자어로 “아니다” 라는 뜻을 갖고 있어서 “비수기”는 “바쁜 시기가 아니다” 라는 뜻이 됩니다.

Jaehwi: “성수기”의 반대는 “비수기”라고 외우시면 되겠네요. 예문 들어주세요.

Kyejin: 요즘은 비수기라 숙박요금이 싸다.

Jaehwi: “Hotel prices are cheap because it’s not peak season”. Ok, now onto the grammar.

GRAMMAR POINT

Jaehwi: In this lesson, you’ll learn about expressions that use the word “생각” meaning “thoughts.”

Kyejin: 이번 대화에서도 ‘생각'이라는 단어가 들어간 여러가지 표현들이 나왔었죠?

Jaehwi: 그럼 첫번째 표현 먼저 살펴볼까요?

Kyejin: 생각이 짧다

Jaehwi: ‘to be thoughtless’, or literally ‘the thought was short.’

Kyejin: “짧다” 는 “short” 란 뜻이어서 “생각이 짧다” 는 “to be short of thoughts” 또는 “to be thoughtless” 란 뜻으로 쓰입니다.

Jaehwi: You can say “생각이 짧다” to those who don’t think about something thoroughly, and make a hasty decision or take an immature action. 예문 살펴볼까요?

Kyejin: 그렇게 말하다니 내가 생각이 짧았어요.

Jaehwi: I was thoughtless in speaking that way.

Kyejin: “생각이 짧다”와 비슷한 의미로 “생각이 없다,”라는 표현도 있습니다.

Jaehwi: So it literally means ‘someone has no thought’ or ‘to be thoughtless’, right?

Kyejin: 네 맞아요.

Jaehwi: 그렇다면, “생각이 짧다”의 반댓말은 뭔가요? “생각이 길다”인가요?

Kyejin: 하하, 아니예요. “생각이 길다”란 말은 없습니다. “생각이 짧다”의 반대말은 “생각이 깊다” 인데요. ‘deep’이라는 뜻의 “깊다”라는 단어를 사용합니다.

Jaehwi: So “생각이 깊다” literally means ‘one’s thought is deep’ or “to be thoughtful”, right? 이번에 나온 대화에서도 “생각의 깊다” 표현이 쓰였죠?

Kyejin: 네. “우리 김대리가 생각이 얼마나 깊은 사람인지는 누구보다 내가 잘 알고 있는데.”

Jaehwi: I know more than anybody that you are a thoughtful person.

Kyejin: 라는 표현에 사용되었습니다.

Jaehwi: 자, 그럼 다음 표현 살펴볼까요?

Kyejin: 생각할 수 도 없어

Jaehwi: “Can’t imagine.” literally “cannot think of something.”

Kyejin: “생각을 할 수 없다”는 말 그대로 “can’t think” 잖아요, 그런데 이 표현은 “can’t imagine” 이란 뜻과 더 가깝다고 보시면 됩니다.

Jaehwi: 본문에 나온 대화를 보시면 이해가 쉬울 것 같아요.

Kyejin: 김대리가 없는 3월은 생각할 수도 없어.

Jaehwi: I can’t imagine March without you.

Kyejin: 이 표현은 어떤 사람이가 무언가가 너무나 중요해서 그사람이 그것이 없는 것은 상상조차 할 수 없다는 뜻입니다.

Jaehwi: It’s a great expression to use when you propose to someone, like “당신이 없는 삶은 생각할 수 없어요” meaning “I can’t imagine my life without you.” 자, 그럼 ‘생각'이란 단어가 사용된 마지막 표현 살펴볼까요?

Kyejin: 여러가지로 생각해주셔서 감사합니다.

Jaehwi: Thank you for thinking of me.

Kyejin: “생각해주다”는 어떤 사람에 대해 단순히 생각하는 것에 넘어 “배려하다” to consider 라는 의미로 사용됩니다..

Jaehwi: 예문 보실까요?

Kyejin: 나를 항상 생각해 주셔서 정말 고마워요.

Jaehwi: “Thank you so much for thinking of me all the time.” Or “Thank you for your consideration towards me all the time.”
