| POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
| Jaehwi: 이번 레슨의 대화에서는 아내가 남편에게 마사지를 해달라고 부탁하는데요, 한국 사람들은 가족들끼리 서로 마사지를 많이 주고 받죠. |
| Kyejin: 예 맞아요. 한국어에서는 마사지 보다는 ‘안마'라는 단어를 많이 사용하는데요. 가족들끼리 ‘안마'를 해주는 경우가 많이 있습니다. 특히 어린 아이들이 있는 집을 보면 아버지가 바닥에 누운 다음에, 자녀들에게 등에 올라가서 마사지를 해달라고 부탁하는 경우가 많아요. |
| Jaehwi: So young kids step on their dad’s back and walk around? That sounds real painful. |
| Kyejin: 아버지들은 시원하다고 얼마나 좋아하는데요. 그리고 나이가 좀 들면 부모님 어깨, 팔, 다리를 주물러 드리기도 하죠. |
| Jaehwi: Even between husband and wife, I saw them giving massages to each other, especially when the wife is pregnant. |
| Kyejin: 네, 맞아요. 그리고 요즘에는 마사지를 해주는 안마 의자란 것이 있는데요. 이 안마 의자에 앉아 버튼 하나만 누르면 오랫동안 아주 시원한 마사지를 받을 수 있습니다. |
| Jaehwi: Yeah, I heard it’s quite pricy but it’s one of the most popular gift items for parents. Well, it should be worthwhile to get one for your parents because at least your parents wouldn’t ask you to give them a massage! |
| Kyejin: 자, 그럼 이번 대화에 나온 단어와 표현들을 살펴볼까요? |
| Jaehwi: Okay, onto the vocab. |
| KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
| Jaehwi: Let's take a closer look at the usage for some of the words and phrases from this lesson. What’s the first phrase? |
| Kyejin: 손맛이 좋다. |
| Jaehwi: “to be a natural cook.” |
| Kyejin: 손은 “hand”란 뜻이구요, 맛은 “taste” 입니다. 그래서 ‘손맛'은 literally ‘taste from hands’ 라는 뜻으로 이야기하면 됩니다. |
| Jaehwi: So, when someone has ‘손맛' that means that someone ‘can make really good tastes with their hands.’ |
| Kyejin: 네. 그래서 어떤 사람이 음식을 정말 잘 할 때 ‘손맛이 좋다'라는 표현을 사용할 수 있습니다. |
| Jaehwi: 예문 살펴볼까요? |
| Kyejin: 우리 어머니는 손맛이 좋다. |
| Jaehwi: My mom is a natural cook. 자 그럼 두번째 표현 살펴 볼까요? |
| Kyejin: 장모님 |
| Jaehwi: Wife’s mother, or mother-in-law. So only a married man can use this word, right? |
| Kyejin: 네 맞아요. |
| Jaehwi: Then what word can a married woman use for her mother-in-law? |
| Kyejin: 그런 경우에는 ‘시어머니' 혹은 ‘시어머님'이라는 단어를 사용합니다. |
| Jaehwi: meaning ‘husband’s mother’ or ‘mother-in-law’ |
| Kyejin: 영어에서는 배우자의 어머니를 모두 “mother in law” 라고 하잖아요. 하지만 한국어에서는 이 둘을 구별해서 쓰는데요. |
| Jaehwi: 네 장모님은 저 같은 남자가 아내의 어머니를 부를 때 쓰는 호칭이구요. |
| Kyejin: 시어머니는 저 같은 여자가 남편의 어머니를 부를 때 쓰는 호칭입니다. 참고로 father-in-law는 ‘장인어른'과 ‘시아버지'로 부를 수 있습니다. |
| Jaehwi: So a married man can say 장모님 for “mother-in-law” and 장인어른 for “father-in-law”. |
| Kyejin: 그리고 결혼한 여자는 mother-in-law 라는 의미로 ‘시어머니', father-in-law 라는 의미로 ‘시아버지'라는 단어를 사용하면 되는거죠. |
| Jaehwi: 자, 그럼 마지막 표현 살펴볼까요? |
| Kyejin: 갈팡질팡 |
| Jaehwi: “To be at a loss.” or literally ‘back and forth, back and forth.’ |
| Kyejin: 갈팡질팡은 결정을 못 내리고 이리 저리 헤매는 모양을 나타내는 표현으로써 주로 동사 “하다” 가 뒤에 따릅니다. |
| Jaehwi: ‘갈팡질팡하다' 처럼 말이죠. ‘갈팡질팡'이라는 표현은 ‘가려고 하고 가지 않으려고 하고' about to go forward then not to go 같은 의미로 해석할 수 있습니다. 그래서 영어로는 ‘to be at a loss’와 같은 의미라고 생각하면 됩니다. |
| Kyejin: 예문 한번 살펴볼까요? 나는 무엇을 고를지 결정하지 못하고 갈팡질팡 하고 있다. |
| Jaehwi: I haven’t decided which one to choose, so I’m still at a loss. |
| Kyejin: 그리고 누군가가 무엇을 할지 결정하지 못하고, 이것을 할까 하지 말까 고민하고 있을 때 이렇게 이야기할 수 있습니다. “갈팡 질팡 하지 말고 빨리 결정해.” |
| Jaehwi: Stop going back and forth and make a decision quickly! Okay, now onto the grammar. |

| Jaehwi: In this lesson, you’ll learn idiomatic expressions that use the word 팔 meaning ‘arm.’ |
| Kyejin: 앞서서 ‘어깨'를 사용한 표현들을 배워봤었죠? ‘팔' arm 도 어깨만큼 중요한 부분이어서 관련된 여러가지 표현들이 많이 있습니다. |
| Jaehwi: 그럼 이번 대화에 나왔던 ‘팔’에 대한 표현들을 하나씩 살펴볼까요? Here’s the first expression. |
| Kyejin: 팔 걷어 붙이고 열심히 요리 연습을 했다. |
| Jaehwi: I rolled up my sleeves and practiced a lot for cooking. |
| Kyejin: 이 문장에서 보시면 “팔 걷어 붙이다” 라는 표현이 쓰였는데요. ‘걷어붙이다'라는 ‘to roll up’이라는 의미의 단어입니다. |
| Jaehwi: 그리고 여기서 ‘팔'은 arms 라는 의미의 단어이지만 여기서는 ‘sleeves’라는 뜻으로 사용되었네요. 그래서 ‘팔 걷어 붙이다'는 영어의 “to roll up your sleeves” 라는 뜻과 같습니다. |

| Jaehwi: He rolls up his sleeves whenever he can help. 자, 그럼 ‘팔'이라는 단어가 사용된 다음 표현 살펴볼까요? |
| Kyejin: 그나저나 요리를 너무 열심히 했더니 팔이 떨어질 것 같네. |
| Jaehwi: Anyway, my arms are about to fall off from cooking so hard. |
| Kyejin: 이 문장에서는 “팔이 떨어질 것 같다” 라는 재미있는 표현이 쓰였는데요. “떨어지다”는 “to fall off” “~것 같다” 는 “to feel like” 정도의 의미를 갖고 있습니다. |
| Jaehwi: 그래서 “팔이 떨어질 것 같다”는 “arms feel like falling off” 라는 의미가 되는거죠. |
| Kyejin: 너무 열심히 팔을 사용해서 팔이 떨어질 것 같을 정도라는 표현인거죠. 그만큼 어떤 일을 열심히 했을 때 이 표현을 사용할 수 있습니다. |
| Jaehwi: So, it’s quite an exaggerated expression, I think. 예문 살펴볼까요? |
| Kyejin: 청소를 너무 열심히 했더니 팔이 떨어질 것 같다. |
| Jaehwi: I cleaned so hard and my arms feel like falling off. 자, “팔” 이 들어가는 마지막 표현 보실까요? |
| Kyejin: 팔은 안으로 굽는다. |
| Jaehwi: “The skin is nearer than the shirt”, or literally ‘Arms bend inside.’ |
| Kyejin: “팔은 안으로 굽는다” 는 한국 속담인데요. “자신과 가까운 사람들에게 더 잘 해준다” 라는 의미의 표현입니다. 리스너 여러분 지금 한 번, 팔 굽혀 보세요. Bend your arms listeners. 팔이 어느쪽으로 굽죠? |
| Jaehwi: 당연히 안으로 굽죠. It goes inside for sure. |
| Kyejin: 여기서 ‘팔'은 ‘나', 안에 있는 ‘내 몸'은 ‘나와 가까운 사람'이라고 생각해보세요. 당연히 어떤 일이 있을 때 나와 모르는 사람보다는 가까운 사람의 편에 서게 되겠죠. 이런 경우에 ‘팔은 안으로 굽는다'라는 표현을 사용할 수 있습니다. |
| Jaehwi: So this phrase means that it’s natural to do something better for someone closer to myself. |
| Kyejin: 네 맞아요. 그래서 우리 팔이 바깥쪽이 아닌 안쪽으로 굽는 것처럼 자기나 자기와 가까운 사람에게 더 맘이 쏠려서 그들에게 더 유리하게 일 처리를 해줄때 이 표현을 사용합니다. |
| Jaehwi: So it has a similar meaning as expressions like “blood is thicker than water” or “the skin is nearer than the shirt.” 예문 살펴볼까요? |
| Kyejin: 역시 팔은 안으로 굽는다더니 김사장님이 자기 동생을 뽑을 줄 알았어. |
| Jaehwi: Just like the saying “blood is thicker than water,” I knew that Mr. Kim would pick his brother. |
