INTRODUCTION
Brandon: In each lesson of this 25 part series, you'll master a common question for Korean learners, and then learn how to answer it like a native speaker. You'll learn how these key phrases work by breaking them down into each component. Then through repetition and new vocabulary, you'll expand your understanding of the question, its answers, and any variations.
GRAMMAR POINT
Brandon: In this lesson, you'll learn how to respond to the common question “What are you doing?” In Korean this is
Kyejin: 무엇을 하고 있습니까? (Mueoseul hago itseumnikka?)
Brandon: The first word in the question is
Kyejin: 무엇 (mueot)
Brandon: meaning “what” in English.
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 무엇 (mueot)
Brandon: Listen again and repeat.
Kyejin: 무엇 (mueot)

Brandon: This pattern of first introducing a word at natural speed, providing the translation, breaking it down, and then giving it again at natural speed will be repeated throughout the series. Try to speak aloud as often as possible. The next word in the question is
Kyejin: 을 (eul)
Brandon: the object marking particle
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 을 (eul)
Brandon: Now repeat.
Kyejin: 을 (eul)

Brandon: Listen to the the first 2 words of the question and repeat.

Brandon: You will hear this common question again and again throughout your studies. Master the following pattern and responses to the question “What are you doing?”
Kyejin: 생각하고 있습니다.

Brandon: means "I'm thinking”. Again, slowly. Repeat the phrase.

Brandon: Let's break it down from the beginning. The first word:
Kyejin: (Slow, by syllable) 생각하 (saenggaka-)
(saenggakha)
Brandon: means ‘to think.’ This is the verb-stem of the verb
Kyejin: 생각하다 (saenggakada)
Brandon: Now repeat
Kyejin: 생각하- (saenggaka-)

Kyejin: (Slow) 고 있습니다. (go itseumnida.)

Brandon: which means “doing something.” as in “I’m doing...” and “You’re doing..”

Brandon: meaning “to do homework”.’ This is the verb-stem of the verb

Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “doing homework.”

Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “thinking” with “doing homework.” Say “I'm doing homework.”

Brandon: Listen to the phrase again, this time with “studying”

Brandon: It mostly stays the same. Simply replace “doing homework” with “studying.” Say “I'm studying.”

Brandon: To make another phrase, replace “studying” with “cooking.”
