Do you know how to make plans in Korean?
Welcome to Three Step Korean Practice by KoreanClass101.com. In this lesson, you will practice making plans in Korean.
Let’s look at the main dialogue.
Two people are having a conversation.
저는 내일 친구들하고 저녁을 먹을 거예요. 지민 씨는 내일 계획이 있어요?(Jeoneun naeil chingudeulhago jeonyeogeul meogeul geoyeyo. Jimin ssi neun naeil gyehoegi isseoyo?)
I’m going to have dinner with my friends tomorrow. Do you have any plans, Jimin?
아니요, 없어요. 내일 한가해요.(Aniyo, eopseoyo. Naeil hangahaeyo.)
No, I don’t. I’m free tomorrow.
In the first character's sentence, "저는 내일 친구들하고 저녁을 먹을 거예요" (Jeoneun naeil chingudeulhago jeonyeogeul meogeul geoyeyo), they say "먹을 거예요" (meogeul geoyeyo).
This is a verb which means, "I will have dinner." Conjugating it with "~을" (~eul), makes it future tense. However, this only applies to verbs that have stems which end in consonant sounds.
For verbs which end in vowel sounds, you conjugate with "~ㄹ" (~l) instead.
Let’s practice with this grammar more in this lesson.
Choose the best answer to complete the sentence. Ready?
저는 모레 도서관에서 (pause with a tap of the finger) 거예요.(Jeoneun more doseogwaneseo ________ geoyeyo.)
저는 모레 도서관에서 (pause with a tap of the finger) 거예요.
공부할 (gongbuhal)
공부할
저는 모레 도서관에서 공부할 거예요.(Jeoneun more doseogwaneseo gongbuhalgeoyeyo.)
저는 모레 도서관에서 공부할 거예요.
I will study at the library the day after tomorrow.
Because 공부할 (gongbuhal) has a stem that ends in a vowel sound, we only need to add ~ㄹ (~l) to conjugate it to future tense.
Let's do one more.
저는 금요일에 집에서 텔레비전을 (pause with a tap of the finger) 거예요.(eoneun geumyoire jibeseo telebijeoneul ________ geoyeyo.)
저는 금요일에 집에서 텔레비전을 (pause with a tap of the finger) 거예요.
볼(bol)
저는 금요일에 집에서 텔레비전을 볼 거예요.(eoneun geumyoire jibeseo telebijeoneul bol geoyeyo.)
저는 금요일에 집에서 텔레비전을 볼 거예요.
I will watch television at home on Friday.
The stem of 볼 (bol) ends with a vowel sound as well, so it again is conjugated with just ~ㄹ (~l).
Unscramble the words to make a sentence.
Let's start. Ready?
엄마가 (Eommaga)
엄마가 저녁(Eommaga jeonyeog)
엄마가 저녁을 (Eommaga jeonyeogeul)
엄마가 저녁을 만들(Eommaga jeonyeogeul mandeul)
엄마가 저녁을 만들 거예요.(Eommaga jeonyeogeul mandeul geoyeyo.)
Mom will make dinner.
엄마가 저녁을 만들 거예요.
Choose the best answer to complete the sentence. Ready?
다음 주말에 저는 강남에서 삼겹살을 (먹을 or 멀) 거예요.
Daeum jumare jeoneun gangnameseo samgyeopsareul (meogeul or meol) geoyeyo.
다음 주말에 저는 강남에서 삼겹살을 (먹을 or 멀) 거예요.
먹을 (meogeul)
먹을
다음 주말에 저는 강남에서 삼겹살을 먹을 거예요.
Daeum jumare jeoneun gangnameseo samgyeopsareul meogeul geoyeyo.
Next weekend, I will eat pork belly in Gangnam.
다음 주말에 저는 강남에서 삼겹살을 먹을 거예요.
먹을 (meogeul) is used here because the stem of the verb, "먹 (meok)" ends in a consonant sound. So, we have to use ~을 (~eul) instead of just ~ㄹ (~l).
Choose the best answer to complete the sentence. Ready?
이번 주에 야채를 (살을 or 살) 거예요.
Ibeon jue yachaereul (saleul/sal) geoyeyo.
이번 주에 야채를 (살을 or 살) 거예요.
살 (sal)
살 (sal)
이번 주에 야채를 살 거예요.
Ibeon jue yachaereul sal geoyeyo.
This week, I will buy vegetables.
이번 주에 야채를 살 거예요.
살 is used here because the stem of the verb is 사 (sa), which ends in a vowel sound.
Let's translate some English sentences into Korean, now.
Translate "I will meet a friend tomorrow" into Korean.
First is
내일 (Naeil). Tomorrow.
followed by
친구를 (chinguleul). friend.
next
만날 (mannal). Meet. The "~ㄹ (~l)" conjugation sets it to future tense.
followed by
거예요 (geoyeyo). This is paired with a verb to set it in the future tense. It's similar to "a thing that will happen."
Since the stem of 만날 (mannal) is "만나 (manna)," which ends in a vowel sound, it uses the "~ㄹ (~l)" conjugation.
내일 친구를 만날 거예요.(Naeil chinguleul mannal geoyeyo.)
I will meet a friend tomorrow.
내일 친구를 만날 거예요.
Translate "I will go shopping next month" into Korean.
First is
다음(daeum). next.
followed by
달에 (dale). month.
next
쇼핑을. shopping.
followed by
갈. Go. The ~ㄹ (~l) conjugation sets it to future tense.
finally
거예요 (geoyeyo). In combination with the verb, this sets the sentence to the future tense.
Because the stem is "가 (ga)," which ends in a vowel sound, we use the "~ㄹ (~l)" conjugation.
다음 달에 쇼핑을 갈 거예요.
Daeum dale syopingeul gal geoyeyo.
다음 달에 쇼핑을 갈 거예요.
Translate "I will read a book" into Korean.
First is
저는 (jeoneun). I.
followed by
책을 (chaegeul). book.
next
읽을 (ilgeul). read. The ~을 (~eul) conjugation sets it to future tense.
followed by
거예요 (geoyeyo). In combination with the verb, this sets the sentence to the future tense.
"읽을 (gongbuhal)" ends in a consonant, so it uses the "~을 (~eul)" conjugation to become future tense.
저는 책을 읽을 거예요.(jeoneun chaegeul ilgeul geoyeyo.)
I will read a book.
저는 책을 읽을 거예요.
Let's do some matching.
Listen to me as I speak. Can you match the future tense verb that I say to its stem on the board?
나는 영화를 볼 거예요.(Naneun yeonghwareul bol geoyeyo.)
Let’s listen one more time.
나는 영화를 볼 거예요.
Did you hear, 볼? 볼 is the future tense form of 보다 (boda).
나는 영화를 볼 거예요.
I will watch a movie.
How about...?
나는 한국어를 공부할 거예요.(Naneun hangugeoreul gongbuhal geoyeyo.)
Let’s listen one more time.
나는 한국어를 공부할 거예요.
Did you hear, 공부할 (gongbuhal)? 공부할 is the future tense form of 공부하다 (gongbuhada)
나는 한국어를 공부할 거예요.
I will study Korean.
Next...
나는 피자를 먹을 거예요.(Naneun pijareul meogeul geoyeyo.)
One more time.
나는 피자를 먹을 거예요.
Did you hear, 먹을 (meogeul)? 먹을 is the future tense form of 먹다 (meokda).
나는 피자를 먹을 거예요.
I will eat pizza.
Next...
나는 옷을 살 거예요.(Naneun oseul sal geoyeyo.)
One more time.
나는 옷을 살 거예요.

나는 옷을 살 거예요.
I will buy clothes.
And...
나는 공원에 갈 거예요.(Naneun gongwone gal geoyeyo.)
One more time.
나는 공원에 갈 거예요.
Did you hear, 갈 (gal)? 갈 is the future tense form of 가다 (gada).
나는 공원에 갈 거예요.
I will go to the park.
Now you know how to talk in the future tense with ~ㄹ(~l) and ~을(~eul) in Korean. 잘 가요 (jal gayo)!
...and now you can move on to the next lesson in the pathway on KoreanClass101.com.
