| In today’s lesson, we will go over a few useful and high frequency adjectives. When you are traveling in Korea and you are hanging out with your friends, you may want to express your admiration for certain things. You may be taken away by Korea. Korea has been modernizing quite rapidly over the last few years and has become a very modern and beautiful city. So, to express your admiration of Korea, we can say 예뻐요 (yeppeoyo). This word means pretty. One more time, it’s 예뻐요 (yeppeoyo). Now, you can use this word towards buildings, mountains, articles of clothing, earrings, hats, food, and people as well. |
| We can use this word as is. You are simply saying pretty but if you want to be a little more specific, we can say 이거 예뻐요 (igeo yeppeoyo). One more time, it’s 이거 예뻐요 (igeo yeppeoyo). And now by syllable, 이-거 예-뻐-요 (i-geo ye-ppeo-yo). The first word of this phrase is 이거 (igeo). This means this and what follows after that is 예뻐요 (yeppeoyo) which means pretty. So altogether it’s this pretty. And you probably shouldn’t be using this towards people but if you want to say someone is pretty, you can simply say 예뻐요 (yeppeoyo). Okay, another useful and high frequency adjective is 좋아요 (joayo) which in English means good. One more time, it’s 좋아요 (joayo). And by syllable, 좋-아-요 (jo-a-yo). |
| We can use this phrase when referring to someone or something that is well, good. For example, we can use this phrase when someone suggests something, 좋아요 (joayo). This is saying, it’s a good idea. If you are traveling and walking all day and then you finally get to sit down, 좋아요 (joayo). It’s good. One more time, 좋아요 (joayo). And once again you can be a little more specific by adding 이거 좋아요 (igeo joayo). This is good. And for our last high frequency adjective, we can say 재미있어요 (jaemiisseoyo). This means fun or interesting. One more time, 재미있어요 (jaemiisseoyo). This word actually means fun and/or interesting. |
| For example, if we say 재미있어요 (jaemiisseoyo) when we are talking about a movie that we watched, we are saying it’s interesting. When we say 재미있어요 (jaemiisseoyo) when we are talking about a book that we read, we are saying it’s interesting. If we say 재미있어요 (jaemiisseoyo) when we are out with some friends, in that context, it means fun. One way we can modify these adjectives is by saying 진짜 (jinjja) in front of these adjectives. One more time it’s 진짜 (jinjja). This means really. One more time, it’s 진짜 (jinjja). So just like in English, we can say really pretty, really good or really fun. And in Korean, this will be 진짜 예뻐요 (jinjja yeppeoyo) really pretty, 진짜 좋아요 (jinjja joayo) really good, 진짜 재미있어요 (jinjja jaemiisseoyo) really fun or really interesting. The usage is just like in English. |
