In today’s lesson, we will introduce you to some phrases that hopefully you won’t have to use. When traveling to Korea, the threat of physical violence is not prevalent but one should always be careful. In addition, this phrase is not limited to threatening situations but can be used in the unfortunate event that you or someone around you is in need of immediate assistance. Today, we will learn how to call for help. In Korean, help is 도와주세요 (dowajuseyo)! One time slowly, it’s 도와주세요 (dowajuseyo). And now by syllable, 도-와-주-세-요 (do-wa-ju-se-yo). This phrase can’t exactly be broken down because the word 도와 (dowa) is help but you need the 주세요 (juseyo) at the end because you need someone to do it for you. 도와주세요 (dowajuseyo). |
When I was in Korea, one of my best friends went into a bathroom of a supermarket. She went in and saw a girl passed out on the floor. So my friend started yelling 도와주세요 (dowajuseyo). People came immediately and took care of the situation. So if you are ever in a bind, remember 도와주세요 (dowajuseyo). Now in Korean, if you want to call for the police, you can say 경찰을 부르세요 (gyeongchareul bureuseyo) One time slowly, it’s 경찰을 부르세요 (gyeongchareul bureuseyo). And now by syllable, 경-찰-을 부-르-세-요 (gyeong-chal-eul bu-reu-se-yo). The first word 경찰 (gyeongchal) means police. What follows immediately after that is 을 (eul). 을 (eul) is an object marker. These two are spoken together. One more time together, it’s 경찰을 (gyeongchareul). The next part is 부르세요 (bureuseyo) which means to call for. One time by syllable, it’s 부-르-세-요 (bu-reu-se-yo). |
Altogether we have 경찰을 부르세요 (gyeongchareul bureuseyo) which literally means police call for or call for the police. More than any other crime, a fight is probably what will prompt you to call the police. So if you ever need to call the phone number for the police in Korea is 119 or in Korean 일-일-구 (il-il-gu). We went over two phrases today. 도와주세요 (dowajuseyo) and 경찰을 부르세요 (gyeongchareul bureuseyo) but by far, the most important one is 도와주세요 (dowajuseyo). This is because it will raise awareness and someone who can properly take care of the situation will come. |
Okay. To close our today’s lesson, we’d like for you to practice what you’ve learned. I will provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud. You will have a few seconds before I give you the answer. So 화이팅 (hwaiting)! |
