| In today’s lesson, we will introduce you to a phrase that will help you get a beat on something specific you are looking for. Today’s phrase is, where can I get or buy something. First, we need something. So let’s use the word 물 (mul) which means water. Now water, you can get water anywhere, the river, the gutter, the rain, wherever you – it’s everywhere but if you go into a convenient store and you ask for water, they will know you want bottled water. So let’s hear it one more time slowly. 물 (mul). In Korean, where can I get or buy water is 물 어디에서 살 수 있어요 (mul eodieseo sal su isseoyo)? One time slowly, it’s 물 어디에서 살 수 있어요 (mul eodieseo sal su isseoyo)? |
| Let’s break it down by syllable. 물 어-디-에-서 살 수 있-어-요 (mul eo-di-e-seo sal su i-sseo-yo)? The first word you hear is 물 (mul) which means water. One time slowly, 물 (mul). The second word you hear is 어디 (eodi). This means where. Immediately following is 에서 (eseo). This is a location particle and needs a location in front of it. But here the interrogative where is enough. So let’s hear these two together. 어디에서 (eodieseo). And lastly we have 살 수 있어요 (sal su isseoyo). This means, can buy. One time slowly, it’s 살 수 있어요 (sal su isseoyo). So altogether, we have 물 어디에서 살 수 있어요 (mul eodieseo sal su isseoyo)? Literally translated, this means water where can buy. I is inferred. So altogether, it pretty much means where can I buy water. |

And now by syllable, 영-어 신-문 (yeong-eo sin-mun). 영어 (yeongeo) means English and 신문 (sinmun) means newspaper.
