Welcome, welcome, welcome to Korean Top Words! (Annyeonghaseyo, keijinimnida.) |
In this lesson you will learn key Korean vocabulary related to modes of transportation, and you will also learn a secret about something in South Korea at the end of this video. |
Let's get started! |
기차(gicha), "train" |
[SLOW] 기차(gicha) |
기차(gicha) |
(Myeot si gichayeyo?) |
(Se siyo.) |
By the way do you know the fastest train in Korea? that's KTX in Korean pronunciation is |
케이티엑스 (keitiekseu) yes we use the english word directly. so from Seoul to Busan you can go in two hours. That's awesome, isn't it? |
(Bihaenggiga eonje dochakaeyo?) |
(Ohu ne sieyo.) |
When you arrive in Korea you'll probably arrive in 인천공항(incheongonghang) first |
인천공항(incheongonghang), it means Incheon airport international airport. And did you know that Incheon airport provide you free fast internet so before going to Seoul you can check all the |
information for free fast |
(I beoseu gonghange gayo?) |
(Aniyo, i beoseuga anieyo). |
By the way do you know t-money card? |
T-money card. T is from transport, transportation. Money, money. Card, card. So basically it's a Korean transportation card, t-money card and if you have this card it's super useful, you can take a bus, subway easily. So if you visit Korea, don't forget to get one in the airport, yes, you can get it in the airport easily |
택시(taeksi), "taxi" |
[SLOW] 택시(taeksi) |
택시(taeksi) |
(Pigonhajyo? Taeksireul bulleoyo.) |
(Algesseoyo. Jigeum bureulgeyo.) |
So when you arrive in the Incheon airport you have several ways to go to Seoul and one of the way is taxi and you thought “wow, taxi is super expensive” right? |
well that's why i couldn't take a taxi in other countries but in Korea don't worry the taxi is not so expensive. So, for example if you go to 명동(myeongdong) where you can do amazing shopping in Seoul but it just takes 35 dollars roughly it's not so expensive right? So a lot of foreigners and tourists use a taxi to travel around in Seoul |
(Jajeongeoro galkkayo?) |
(Ne, joayo.) |
Korea is a safe country so a lot of people put their laptop or wallet on their desk on their table |
they sit on the chair in the cafe and they go to the toilet and when they come back everything is here, but did you know that your bicycle is not as safe as other stuff in Korea? So it can be stolen easily so make sure to lock it up |
차(cha), "car" |
[SLOW] 차(cha) |
(Mingyu ssi, cha isseoyo?) |
(Ne, isseoyo.) |
Oh I envy Mingyu, he has a car and I don't. I don't have a license. And did you know that in Korea we have this word. |
Can you guess what it means? It's from an English word, well I would say it's a Korean English, |
Konglish. 카푸어(kapueo), car poor, so someone is very poor because they bought an expensive car. Somehow in Korea more and more young people are 카푸어(kapueo), because they want to show off a cool car to other people and they don't have money |
(Ibeon jumare mwo hal geoyeyo?) |
(Namjachingurang otobaireul tal geoyeyo.) |
(Seukuteo taneun geol joahaeyo?) |
(Ne, geureonde aju gakkeum tayo.) |
Ah, be careful, this is not a kickboard that they’ll use in a ski park. This is more like a motor ride scooter or moped. So in Korea, 스쿠터(seukuteo) is a motor ride scooter. Please remember that. |
배(bae), "boat" |
[SLOW] 배(bae) |
(Mingyu ssi, baega eopsseoyo.) |
(Eo, jeongmallyo? Eodi gatjyo?) |
By the way, 배(bae) has many different meanings. It can be belly, stomach, tummy, or it can also be the fruit, pear. And as I mentioned, it can be a boat, or a ship, cruise ship, so smallest boat to a biggest ship. So, you need to see a context carefully. |
헬리콥터(hellikopteo), "helicopter" |
[SLOW] 헬리콥터(hellikopteo) |
헬리콥터(hellikopteo) |
(Museun soriyeyo?) |
(Ah, hellikopteoga jinagana bwayo.) |
Well, helicopter is not a common mode of transportation in Korea, but I heard K-pop stars |
and celebrities sometimes use it because they are busy. So, well, I haven't tried it myself, but if you are rich or if someone is rich and they can pay for it, why not? It can be an option for them. |
지하철(jihacheol), "subway" |
[SLOW] 지하철(jihacheol) |
지하철(jihacheol) |
(Eodiyeyo?) |
(Geoui da wasseoyo. Banggeum jihacheoreseo naeryeosseoyo.) |
Here's a quick cultural tip of 교통약자석(gyotongyakjaseok) in Korean subway. 교통약자석(gyotongyakjaseok) means priority seats in Korea. And these seats are for disabled people, old people, and pregnant people. And Korean people tend to not sit there even if the seats are empty. So, well, when you see these seats are empty, just leave them empty, because that's what Korean people do. |
Let's review. |
