INTRODUCTION
(ja, hangugeo gongbu siganimnida.) “It’s time to study Korean.”
(annyeonghaseyo, yunseorimnida.) “Hello, I’m Yunseol.”
(annyeonghaseyo, Hyunuimnida.) ”Hello, I’m Hyunu.”
Keith: Keith here. Picture Video Vocab lesson number two, Cyber Korea, what a name! Cyber Korea, well, Korea is one of the most internet savvy countries in the world.
Hyunu: That's right. And in Korea the Internet speed is very, very fast.
Yunseol: The speed is fast and you can use the wireless Internet almost everywhere.
Keith: And yeah, everyone's so connected to the Internet. Everybody, I think it's like 70 percent or something. Okay. So today we're talking about surfing than that in Korea or in Korean because the net does not stop at one country. Okay. So in Korea, what are some major Korean websites for searching? I mean most people I think in the world use Google.
Yunseol: We have Google Korea. Yes, we used it but not as much as we use Naver.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: ne, neibeoga jeongmal mani sseuijyo.)
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: ne, jeodo neibeoreul jeil mani sseoyo.)
Keith: Well what is Naver exactly?
(Hyunu: neibeoneun hangugeseo gajang keun poteol wepsaiteu jungui hanayeyo.)
Keith: I mean, but everyone else uses google. Why does everyone use Naver as the main search engine?
(Yunseol: neibeoeneun hangaji teugihan gineungi inneunde, yujeodeul, geureonikka botong sseuneun saramdeuri jilmunhago geugeoe daehan dabeul ollineun geureon gineungi isseoyo. geuraeseo i gineungeul saramdeuri jeil mani sayonghaeseo, saramdeuri neibeoreul jeil mani sseoyo.)
Keith: So having that user community is really unique to Naver.
(Yunseol: eo... neibeoeman inneun geon anijiman, neibeoe inneun siseutemi gajang jal mandeureojyeoisseoyo.)
Keith: So it's the most well established community. Well, if you guys are interested…
Yunseol: 네
(Yunseol: ne)
Keith: Naver is n a v e r dot com. What are the portal websites do you use as well?
Hyunu: Daum
Keith: d a u m.net
Hyunu: Cyworld
Keith: c y w o r l d dot.com. It's a, it's a social networking tool.
Hyunu: Empas
Keith: e m p a s.com.
(Hyunu: geu oeedo mani inneunde, jigeum malhaneun wepsaiteudeureun amado moreuneun sarami byeollo eopseul geoyeyo.)
Keith: So almost everybody in Korea uses these main portal websites.
(Hyunu: 네
(Hyunu: ne)
Keith: Okay. And are all of these the same or do they have different characteristics?
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: eo, dallayo.)
Keith: how are they different?
(Yunseol: neibeoneun saramdeuri botong geomsaegeul hal ttae mani sseugoyo, daeumeun donghohoe hwaldongeul hal ttaerang dongyeongsangeul bol ttae mani sseuguyo. geurigo majimageuro ssaiwoldeuneun hompireul tonghaeseo chingudeulgwa yeollageul hageona sajineul ollil ttae mani sseoyo.)
Keith: So they all have their own special usages and people go to these different websites for special needs. So Naver for searching and Daum for...
Hyunu: Club activities and viewing videos.
Keith: And cyworld is...
Hyunu: This is for uploading pictures and talking to your friends.
Keith: It's like the Korean facebook except it's been around longer. Okay. So to get a look at some of the words that we're going to be going over, why don't we take a listen to the dialogue?
DIALOGUE
(Seol: eo? na-do moreugetneunde? geunyang neibeo-eseo geomsaekhae bomyeon an dwae?)
(Hyunu: neibeo?)
지식iN에 물어 봐.
(Seol: eung. jisikin-e mureo bwa.)
(Hyunu: arasseo. neibeo-e deureo wasseo. geunyang yeogi-e "peurangseueo"rago chimyeon dwae?)
(Seol: eung. geureoke hae-do an naomyeon jisikin-e gaseo jilmunhae bwa. "peurangseueo eodiseo baeul so isseoyo?"rago.)
(Hyunu: a... geureokuna. uwa! yeogi peurangseueo dongyeongsang-i myeot gae itneunde?)
(Seol: gongbuhaneun naeyong-e daehan geon eopseo?)
(Hyunu: eum... uwa. peurangseueo-reul gachi gongbuhaneun kape-ga itdaneunde?)
(Seol: jal dwaetne! gaiphaeseo gongbuhae bwa.)
(Hyunu: eo? rogeuin haraneunde? na aidi eopseo.)
(Seol: a... aidi-ga eopseumyeon, cheoeum-euro doragaseo "hoewongaip" hamyeon dwae.)
(Hyunu: cheoeum? a... a, hoewongaip? okei! eo? na beolsseo gaipdoeeo itdaneunde? bimilbeonho-ga teullidae!)
(Seol: mwoya... gaiphae noko gieok-eul mot haneun geoya? bimilbeonho chatgi-e deureoga bwa.)
(Hyunu: eonje gaiphaetji? jinjja gieok an naneunde... amuteun gomapda! bimilbeonho chajaseo hae bolge!)
(Seol: geurae, haengun-eul bireo! yeolsimhi gongbuhaeya dwae!)
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: seolssi, inteonet mani sseusijyo?)
Yunseol: 네.
(Yunseol: Ne.)
(Hyunu: juro mwohaneun dee sseuseyo?)
(Yunseol: nyuseudo chatgo, naeil nalssiga eotteonga geugeotdo chajabogoyo, chingudeulhante imeildo bonaeguyo.)
Hyunu: How about you Keith?
Keith: Same as her, you know, just check the weather, news and email.
(Yunseol: kiseuneun inteoneseuro mulgeoneul sal ttaedo isseoyo?)
Keith: Yes. Well I don't shop on the Internet much, but uh, sometimes sometimes computer stuff.
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: yereul deureoseo?)
Keith: Computer stuff
Hyunu: Computer stuff you don't really have to look at it.
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: sasil jeodo keompyuteo inteoneseseo sasseoyo.)
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: Oh, really?)
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: Yes, I bought it from Gmarket.)
Keith: Can we have that web address?
Yunseol: www.gmarket.co.kr
Keith: And that's just a shopping website that many Koreans use. Alright. So what are we taking a look at it right now
(Hyunu: jigeum yeoreobuneun neibeoui seukeurin syoseul bogo gyesimnida.)
Keith: And the screenshot of Naver is going to be the first thing you see when you go to Naver.com
Keith: So why don't we go through some of the search terms, the website terms and Korean so the listeners can have a better understanding of Korean cyberspace and learn some new vocabulary. So, this first page that we see, what do you call this?
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: cheoeum peiji)
Keith: This can actually be broken down. What's the first word?
Hyunu: 페이지
(Hyunu: cheoeum. peiji)
Keith: The Koreanized English word for "page" and very simple. First page.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: geureonde, “hom”iragodo hagido haeyo.)
Keith: And this is another English word. It just means home.
(Hyunu: ye. jigeum ireon peijineun cheoeum peijirago haneunde, dareun peijieseo cheoeum peijiro doragal ttaeneun cheoeum peijineun neomu gireoseo, homiragodo haeyo.)
Keith: So you can see instead of 처음 페이지, you can see home, the link, on the website to return to the first page.
Hyunu: 네.
(Hyunu: ne.)
Keith: Okay. So where should we start?
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: jeil keun menyudeulbuteo bolkkayo?)
Keith: Alright, the biggest menus first. Sounds good.
Yunseol: 메일
(Yunseol: meil)
Keith: Email
Yunseol: 메일.
(Yunseol: meil. meil)
(Hyunu: hanguk saramdeureun imeirirago hagibodaneun geunyang meirirago haeyo.)
Keith: Yeah, it's the same thing as email except without the E. alright. Next we have...
Yunseol: 카페
(Yunseol: kape)
Keith: online groups and work communities.
Yunseol: 카페.
(Yunseol: kape. kape.)
(Hyunu: ne, botong yeongeoeseoneun kaperago hamyeon jeongmal chareul masineun gosinde, hangugeseoneun inteoneseseo kapega yumyeonghagi ttaemune, chinguga “na kape mandeureosseo” rago hamyeon “Oh, you opened up a cafe?” ga anira, inteonese ollain geurup aektibitireul hal su inneun jangsoreul mandeun geosijyo.)
Keith: So instead of cafe, Korean doesn't have an F sound in there. So it says 카페.
Keith: Yeah, what are you actually doing? Like Korean cafes?
Yunseol: The real actual cafe?
Keith: Yeah. Real, real, real cafes.
Yunseol: You drink coffee, eat sandwiches, and talk.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: chingu gidarigeona.)
Keith: When you're waiting for your friends, a lot of students actually go there together to study or...
(Yunseol: majayo. gakkeumeun kapee gamyeon neomu mani gongbureul hago isseoseo yeogiga gongbuhaneun deinji keopireul masineun deinji hetkkallil ttaedo isseoyo.)
Keith: So were you ever confused when you're a student studying in cafes for long, long, long hours.
(Yunseol: geureom dangyeonhajyo. sa cheonwonjjari kaperate hana sikyeonoko han sesigan? nesigan anjaitdeon jeokdo isseotdeon geot gatayo.)
Keith: So maybe that's where this word comes from. Online groups and communities. People get together in real cafes to study and do whatever together in groups. Maybe it's the same thing online
(Hyunu: amado. geureoketjyo. geureonde choegeune ssaiwoldeuga jeongmal yumyeonghaejyeonneunde, ssaiwoldeueseoneun keulleobiraneun mareul sseoyo.)
Keith: Why doesn't cyworld use cafe and why does it use club?
(Hyunu: waenyamyeon kapeneun neibeorang daeumeseo sseuneun mariraseo, geunyang raibeoringeot gatayo.)
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: chabyeolhwareul)
Keith: Just to set themselves apart from Naver and Daum. Okay. So let's move onto our next word
Yunseol: 블로그
(Yunseol: beullogeu)
Keith: Blog.
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: beullogeu. beullogeu.)
Keith: And this is obviously the Koreanized version of the English word "blog."
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: yojeume beullogeu sseuneun saramdeul jeongmal manchyo?)
(Yunseol: ne, geunde jeoneun yeojeonhi ssaiwoldeueseo norayo. beullogeu ansseoyo.)
Keith: So cyworld doesn't have a blog?
Yunseol: It is called
(Yunseol: It is called mini hompi. geurigo beullogeurangeun jom dallayo.)
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: juro sajineul ollineun gosijyo.)
Keith: Cyworld is mostly for photos and blog.
Keith: 블로그 is mostly on Naver, maybe.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: neibeo, daeum.)
Keith: And this is, you know, just like a blog in English, you know, you just blog about whatever you want. And if you guys don't know KoreanClass101.com has a blog, too. What's the next word?
Yunseol: 지식iN
(Yunseol: jisikin)
Keith: Okay, let's break this down. What's the first part?
Yunseol: 지식.
(Yunseol: jisik.)
Keith: Knowledge.
Yunseol: 인
(Yunseol: in)
Keith: And this is actually an English, if you can see from the picture over here - IN, but if you say it in Korean, it comes from the Chinese character 인 which means 사람, person.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: ne, majayo.)
(Yunseol: geureonikka, se gaega hapchyeojin geoyeyo. jisik, peulleoseu saram, peulleoseu inteonet.)
Keith: Oh, okay. So that IN doubles as two words, 인 "person" and 인 as "internet." I don't think we actually went over the word. How do you say Internet in Korean?
(Yunseol: inteonet. geunde, jisikiNi mwoyeyo?)
Hyunu: 지식iN은 음..
(Hyunu: jisikiNeun eum.. gunggeumhan ge isseumyeon gaseo mureobomyeon, dareun saramdeuri daedabeul haejuneun gosieyo.)
Keith: And that's where that 인 comes from. That person. Right? So if I ever have a question, instead of just searching the internet, searching encyclopedias, you ask people, that's a whole community thing.
(Yunseol: eo yereul deureoseo oneul kiseuga masinneun galbijjimeul gago sipeoyo. gangnamyeok geuncheoe, geureomyeon mureobomyeon dwaeyo. “gangnamyeok geuncheo masinneun galbijjim eodiyeyo” geureom, saramdeuri mak daedapaejwoyo.)
Keith: And what do you get for answering these questions?
Yunseol: Nothing.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: geunyang pointeu.)
Keith: Points.
(Hyunu: geurigo gibuni joajineungeot.i saram dowajwotda.)
Keith: Ok. Well I think this is pretty similar to Yahoo Answers. Just ask a question and you answer it and you get points and these points actually don't do anything but you feel good.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: uri daeum daneoneun mwoyeyo?)
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: syoping)
Keith: Shopping.
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: syoping. syoping)
Keith: What are some of the websites that are big on shopping and Korea?
(Hyunu: daeumeseo diensyap eul hago itgo, akka seolssiga malhan jimaketdo keoyo. geurigo hanguk oksyeondo itgo, inteopakeudo isseoyo.)
Keith: It's like the Korean Ebay.
Hyunu: 네.
(Hyunu: ne.)
Keith: Okay. And here are the addresses. And by the way, what's the most important thing? What's the most important word? Search. How do you say that?
Yunseol: 검색
(Yunseol: geomsaek. geomsaek)
Keith: And do you use this word in everyday life? Like, Oh, I'm searching for my bag.
Yunseol: Ah…
(Yunseol: Ah…aniyo.)
Hyunu: No...
(Hyunu: gabangeul geomsaekago itda? an sseoyo. geomsaegiran daneoreul inteonesi anigo pyeongsoe deureumyeon waenji gyeongchare jjotgigo inneun gibun? animyeon gonghangeseo dareun narae gal ttae, geomsaegeul batjyo.)
Keith: So it kind of gives off the nuance that you did something wrong and you're being searched by the police or airport officials. Military officials. So did you ever get searched before?
Yunseol: Well... no.
Keith: So 검색 is almost always only used for the Internet.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: ne, majayo.)
Keith: And the police.
(Hyunu: ne, majayo. geureonikka gyeongchalseoe gaseo “jeoneun chingureul geomsaekago isseoyo.” rago malhaji maseyo. “chingureul chatgo isseoyo.” rago malhasyeoya haeyo.)
Keith: So if you're saying... I’m.. That’s like...
Hyunu: I’m searching your friend’s body for money...
Keith: Okay. Let's look at some other parts of the webpage. Why don't we check out the sign in the First Section? What's the word for sign in or login?
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: rogeuin.)
Keith: Login.
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: rogeuin.)
Keith: And how about signup?
Hyunu: 회원.
(Hyunu: hoewongaip. hoewongaip. hoewon. hoewon.)
Keith: Member. And what's the second part of the word?
Hyunu: 가입.
(Hyunu: gaip.)
Keith: Sign Up. Register. Join. And these are two very essential parts of navigating Korean websites, actually, you need to be able to log in and sign up.
You always need a 주민등록번호.
(Hyunu: geunde jeil bulpyeonhan geoneunyo. You always need a jumindeungnokbeonho.)
(Yunseol: a, geuraedo yosaeneunyo, oegugineul wihaeseo ttaro hoewongaip haneun bangbeobi saenggyeosseoyo.)
Keith: This idea of having the Korean social security numbers. Nowadays, most websites are producing ways for non Koreans to sign up.
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: majayo.)
Keith: So what sites have implemented this?
Hyunu:
(Hyunu:ssaiwoldeuga geureoke hagi sijakaesseoyo.)
Keith: All right, I signed up, I got my id. Now what do I need?
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: bimilbeonho.)
Keith: password
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: bimilbeonho.)
Keith: And actually this can be broken down as well. What's the first part?
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: bimil.)
Keith: Secret
Yunseol: 번호.
(Yunseol: beonho.)
Keith: Number
Keith: Secret number. Makes a lot of sense.
Yunseol: So what's your secret number?
Keith: Seol.
Hyunu: Too short.
(Hyunu: Too short. yeoseot janeun doeeoya haeyo.)
Keith: It needs six characters. Okay, well, 윤설. Okay. So now that we've got a password and just in case you guys forget your password, how do we find our password again?
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: bimilbeonho chatgi.)
Keith: Find a password. That last part..
Yunseol:
(Yunseol: chatgi.)
Keith: Find. Alright. So if you take a look here right below this, there are some category words. Why don't we take a look at them to get familiarized. The first word we have is...
Hyunu: 책
(Hyunu: chaek)
Keith: book.
Keith: Next we have...
Yunseol: 인물
(Yunseol: inmul)
Keith: People. Now you can search for info on people, but usually well-known people like movie stars, politicians, writers, singers.
Yunseol: Will I see your name in there someday?
Keith: Oh yeah, definitely. My name is going to be there. Watch out for me. Alright, well let's move on. Our next word is...
Hyunu: 지역
(Hyunu: jiyeok)
Keith: Area, local Info.
Yunseol: 지도
(Yunseol: jido)
Keith: Map.
Hyunu: 동영상
(Hyunu: dongyeongsang)
Keith: Video, movie clips. To watch 동영상 video clips, movie clips. Then most of the time people go to Daum.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: ne, gajang hwajiri joayo.)
Keith: All right, next we have...
Yunseol: 영화
(Yunseol: yeonghwa)
Keith: Movie
Hyunu: 부동산
(Hyunu: budongsan)
Keith: Real Estate.
Yunseol: 키친
(Yunseol: kichin)
Keith: Kitchen, cooking. Alright. And yeah this is a cool place if you, if you're into Korean food, actually, you can go there and search for recipes in Korean. And what's recipe?
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: yori bangbeop. ttoneun yoribeop.)
Keith: Can we break those down?
Hyunu: 방법.
(Hyunu: yori. bangbeop.)
Keith: That can actually be broken down. The first part is...
Hyunu: 요리.
(Hyunu: yori.)
Keith: Cooking.
Hyunu: 방법
(Hyunu: bangbeop)
Keith: Method.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: ttoneun yoribeop.)
Keith: cooking method is just a shortened version.
Hyunu: 네.
(Hyunu: ne.)
Keith: So yeah. And you can search for this and Korean too.
(Hyunu: jeongmal joeul geot gatayo. gongbuhaneun de doumi mani doel geot gatayo.)
Keith: Yeah, I think it's going to help a lot if you're really into studying Korean and want to eat some Korean food as well.
(Yunseol: geureomyo, joeun jeongbodo mani eotgo, hangugeumsikdo yorihago.)
Keith: Alright, so I think, uh, we're actually going to stop by Naver.com And so I was going to look up a recipe for me and cook me a meal.
Yunseol: What do you want?
Keith: I want
Yunseol: Okay. I can make it.
Keith: No, I want
Yunseol: Ok, I'll search for it on Naver.
(jom deo eoryeoungeollo.)
Keith: I want some Kimchi.
Hyunu:
(Hyunu: gimchiga jeil eoryeopji.)
