POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Keith: All right, so Miseon, in Korea let’s say guys and girl movies, what are they? |
Miseon: Well, guys love action movies, but usually watch holiday action movies, I think. And women like to watch more Korean movies like romance movies and sad movies, something like that. |
Keith: Yeah, you know what, Korean action movies, they’re not so bad. They actually pretty good. I like them, but I want to ask our listeners which Korean movie they enjoyed watching recently. |
Miseon: I’d like to know as well too. Let’s know leaving us a comment. |
Keith: And we’ll be waiting for your comments, but for now, Miseon, how about going to the vocabulary. |
Miseon: All right, that would be wonderful. |

VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Keith: All right, well. We’re going to take a moment to take a deeper look into some of the words and phrases from this lesson. |
Miseon: Okay, the first word we’ll look at is 슬프다. (seulpeuda.) |
Keith: To be sad, to be saddening. |
Miseon: 슬프다, 슬프다. (seulpeuda, seulpeuda.) |
Keith: So 슬프다 (seulpeuda) is the basic form of the verb. How was it used in the dialogue though? |
Miseon: 슬픈 영화 (seulpeun yeonghwa) |
Keith: Sad movie. |
Miseon: So you change the end - 슬프다 to 슬픈 to make it an adjective. 슬픈 표정. (seulpeun pyojeong.) |
Keith: “A sad face”. |
Miseon: 슬픈 노래. (seulpeun norae.) |
Keith: “Sad song”. Okay, so what’s the next word we’re going to take a look at? |
Miseon: 별로 (byeollo) |
Keith: That means not particularly, not very good. |
Miseon: 별로, 별로. (byeollo, byeollo.) |
Keith: Okay, and how was this word used? |
Miseon: This word is used in negative sentences, often with other words, but like in this dialogue, it can be used on its own too. |
Keith: For example: |
Miseon: If you say 별로… (byeollo…) with a little falling tone at the end, it means not particularly, so I don’t really feel like it. 별로 (byeollo). |
Keith: Or you can also say I don’t like it, or you can use it to say, I don’t like it that much. |
Miseon: Exactly. |
Keith: Miseon-ssi, do you like me? |
Miseon: 별로... (byeollo…) well. |
Keith: It’s a joke. |
Miseon: It’s a joke. |
Keith: We love each other. |
Miseon: 네 (ne). |
Keith: You know what else I love? The focus of lesson. |
Miseon: Okay. |
Keith: So let’s move on. |
Miseon: 네 (ne). |
Lesson focus
|
Keith: Miseon-ssi, what’s the focus for this lesson? |
Miseon: The focus of this lesson is how to suggest doing something to someone, and also to learn some expressions about movies |
Keith: Okay, great. Now when you want to suggest doing something together to someone, or ask whether the person wants to do something, how do you say that? |
Miseon: Well, you can use the structure -ㄹ/을래? (-r/eullae?) |
Keith: Right, can we have that one more time? |
Miseon: -ㄹ/을래? (-r/eullae?) |
Keith: And the structure can be translated as both, shall we do something, or do you want to do something in English. But I think it will be easier to look at with some examples. |
Miseon: 네 (ne), so basically, what you do is add this -ㄹ/을래? (-r/eullae?) at the end of a verb stem, so 가다 (gada) for example, |
Keith: Which means “to go”. |
Miseon: Becomes 갈래? (sallae?) |
Keith: “Do you want to go?” |
Miseon: And to buy is 사다 (sada), so it becomes 살래? (sallae?) |
Keith: Do you want to buy? Or maybe shall we buy it? Okay. Well, how about we have a look at the examples from this dialogue, this lesson’s dialogue? |
Miseon: 내일 같이 영화 볼래? (naeil gachi yeonghwa bollae?) |
Keith: "Do you want to watch a movie together tomorrow?" |
Miseon: 슬픈 영화 볼래? (seulpeun yeonghwa bollae?) |
Keith: "Shall we watch a sad movie?" |
Miseon: 액션 영화 볼래? (aeksyeon yeonghwa bollae?) |
Keith: "Shall we watch an action movie?" |
Miseon: 무서운 영화 볼래? (museoun yeonghwa bollae?) |
Keith: "Do you want to watch a scary movie?" |
Miseon: 코미디 볼래? (komidi bollae?) |
Keith: "Do you want to watch a comedy?" |
Miseon: When you say something using -ㄹ/을래? (-r/eullae?) as you’ve seen earlier, it can be translated as two meanings. |
Keith: And can you tell us how that is? |
Miseon: 네 (ne). As you know, the subjects are often omitted in Korean sentences, so when you’re referring to something that the other person’s to do alone, it’s translated only as do you want to? |
Keith: Yeah, and when you’re referring to something that you can do together. |
Miseon: It’s also translated as shall we. |
Keith: Okay, and with that in mind, let’s have a look at just a few more examples. |
Miseon: 같이 밥 먹을래? (gachi bap meogeullae?) |
Keith: "Do you want to go eat with me?" |
Miseon: 나중에 우리 집 올래? (najunge uri jip ollae?) |
Keith: "Do you want to come to my place later today?" |
Miseon: 맥주 마실래? (maekju masillae?) |
Keith: "Do you want to drink some beer?" |
Miseon: I want to drink beer. |
Keith: 같이 마실래요? (gachi masillaeyo?) |
Miseon: 네 (ne). |
