INTRODUCTION |
Seol: 안녕하세요. 윤설입니다. (Annyeonghaseyo. Yunseorimnida.) |
Keith: Keith here. A Present. Seol, you got a present for me? |
Seol: No. |
Keith: Why not? |
Seol: Why? Why do I have to have a present for you? |
Keith: Because you want to. |
Seol: No. I am the one who want to receive it. |
Keith: But I want to receive a present too. |
Seol: Present for nothing, make an excuse. |
Keith: Ah I am thinking. I am thinking and nothing is coming to mind. So… |
Seol: No present. |
Keith: No present. Let’s move on. All right, so as today’s title suggests, yeah we are talking about presents and today is going to be a vocabulary lesson. We have a couple of new vocabulary words that we want to introduce to you today and as you can tell, today’s lesson is about a present but actually today’s lesson is a review lesson. We are just going to give you a couple of new vocabulary words and go over a few things that we went over in our previous lessons just to keep things fresh in your head. All right, so the things to watch out for in today’s lesson is 뭐뭐 (mwomwo) something, something 있어 (isseo) to have and something, something 뭐예요 (mwoyeyo) what is it? Watch out for these two grammatical structures. It’s going to be a review lesson. So it shouldn’t be too difficult to pick up. All right, with that said, what’s going on in today’s conversation? |
Seol: 형사 (hyeongsa) the detective prepared the present for 류지 (ryuji), the birthday present. |
Keith: But it’s something special. |
Seol: Yes it’s really special. |
Keith: All right. So with that said, let’s get into the conversation. |
DIALOGUE |
(1)형사: 음… 생일 선물이 있어. (eum... saengil seonmul-i isseo.) |
(2)류지: 선물? 언제 샀어요? (seonmul? eonje sasseoyo?) |

(6)류지: 네?! 진짜요?! 언제요? (ne? jinjjayo? eonjeyo?) |
(7)형사: 내일. 근데… 너 돈 있어? (naeil. geunde... neo don isseo?) |
(8) 류지: 네?! (ne?) |

(6)류지: 네?! 진짜요?! 언제요? (ne? jinjjayo? eonjeyo?) |
(6)Ryuji: What? Really? When? |
(7)형사: 내일. 근데… 너 돈 있어? (naeil. geunde... neo don isseo?) |
(7)Detective: Tomorrow. By the way... do you have any money? |
(8) 류지: 네?! (ne?) |
(8)Ryuji: What? |
POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Keith: Okay so what do you think? |
Seol: I am happy for Ryuji because he is going out but I am wondering why the detective is asking Ryuji whether he has money or not. I feel I did something more. |
Keith: There is something going on, something strange. |
Seol: Okay. |
Keith: Well as we said in our previous lessons, the listeners are going to have to stick around to find out. |
Seol: Okay. |
Keith: All right, so let’s move on to the vocabulary. The first word we have is |
VOCAB LIST |
Seol: 선물 (seonmul). |
Keith: Present. |
Seol: 선물 (seonmul) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 선물 (seonmul) [natural native speed] |
Keith: Next we have |
Seol: 언제 (eonje). |
Keith: When. |
Seol: 언제 (eonje) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 언제 (eonje) [natural native speed] |
Keith: And now we have |
Seol: 어제 (eoje). |
Keith: Yesterday. |
Seol: 어제 (eoje) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 어제 (eoje) [natural native speed] |
Keith: And now we have |
Seol: 내일 (naeil). |
Keith: Tomorrow. |
Seol: 내일 (naeil) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 내일 (naeil) [natural native speed] |
Keith: And finally we have |
Seol: 돈 (don). |
Keith: Money. |
Seol: 돈 (don) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 돈 (don) [natural native speed] |
Keith: All right. So with these vocabulary words, let’s go into a little more detail. We had yesterday and tomorrow. So let’s go over yesterday, today and tomorrow. What’s yesterday? |
Seol: 어제(eonje). |
Keith: Today. |
Seol: 오늘 (oneul). |
Keith: Tomorrow. |
Seol: 내일 (naeil). |
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Keith: And as today is a review lesson, we are going to go over the conversation line by line and break it down for you. First we have |
Seol: 음… 생일 선물이 있어. (eumtt saengnil seonmuri isseo.) |
Keith: Hey let’s go over that first syllable. What’s that? |
Seol: 음… (eumtt) |
Keith: Now what is that? |
Seol: Umm I am thinking umm…well umm… |
Keith: Yeah it’s a sound that Koreans make when they think. In English, we say hmm…well hmm… |
Seol: Yeah that kind of thing. |
Keith: Umm yeah it’s similar. So that’s one of those sounds that Koreans make when they are thinking. All right, next we have |
Seol: 생일 선물이 있어. (saengnil seonmuri isseo.) |
Keith: All right. Let’s break it down real quick. |
Seol: 생일 (saengnil) |
Keith: Birthday. |
Seol: 선물 (seonmul) |
Keith: Present. Now same thing in English, birthday present. Korean? |
Seol: 생일 선물 (saengnil seonmul) |
Keith: And now we have |
Seol: 이 (i) |
Keith: Subject marking particle |
Seol: 있어 (isseo). |
Keith: To have. I have a birthday present. Now here, we don’t actually have I 저 (jeo) or 나 (na) but here we can easily infer that the detective is saying, I have a birthday present. All right, next we have |
Seol: 선물 (seonmul) ? |
Keith: Present, rising intonation. |
Seol: 언제 샀어요 (eonje sasseoyo)? |
Keith: Okay. First word we have is |
Seol: 언제 (eonje) |
Keith: When. |
Seol: 샀어요 (sasseoyo)? |
Keith: Bought. Now this is to buy in the past tense but this is maybe a little bit beyond newbie but this is a very useful phrase. So when bought. Now this 언제 (eonje) this is a question word when used pretty much in the same context as in English. So let’s go over a couple of examples where you can use this word when. We agree to meet on Monday 월요일 (woryoil) but later on in the week, we call each other and say 월요일 언제 (woryoil eonje) ? Monday, when? What time Monday? And it’s referring to time to be more specific. And my birthday is in June 6월(6wol). So, |
Seol: 6월 언제 (6wol eonje) ? |
Keith: June when. What day in June to be more specific. So this is used pretty much in the same context as it was in English. All right and now we have |
Seol: 어? 어… 어제. (eo? eott eoje.) |
Keith: And as you can guess, it’s one of those sounds that Koreans make when they are thinking. We are going to go over a couple of sounds that are used in Korean when showing your feelings or what you are thinking. So that’s in the next line, the first part we have is |
Seol: 어? (eo?) |
Keith: That’s surprise and in English, we say huh or oh. |
Seol: 어? (eo?) |
Keith: Yeah that’s the Korean version 어? (eo?) and next we have |
Seol: 어… (eott) |
Keith: Thinking as you can guess, ah…and that’s pretty much the same as in English and I think that’s pretty universal maybe. Okay and now we have |
Seol: 어제 (eoje). |
Keith: Yesterday. All right next we have |
Seol: 선물은 뭐예요? (seonmureun mwoyeyo?) |
Keith: This should be fairly familiar. We went over this in one of our previous lessons but let’s break it down real quick. |
Seol: 선물 (seonmul) |
Keith: Present. |
Seol: 은 (eun) |
Keith: Topic marking particle. |
Seol: 뭐예요 (mwoyeyo)? |
Keith: What is. What’s the present? And remember, you can use this to say something what is. All right, now we have |
Seol: 여기서 꺼내 줄게. (yeogiseo kkeonae julge.) |
Keith: Now this is a little bit beyond the scope of today’s lesson. So we are just going to give you the translation, I am going to let you go. |
Seol: Wow thank you. |
Keith: You are not the one in jail kind of. |
Seol: Kind of. |
Keith: That’s not nice. All right, now we have. |
Seol: 네?(ne?)! |
Keith: What. |
Seol: 진짜예요 (jinjjayeyo)? |
Keith: Really |
Seol: 언제요 (eonjeyo)? |
Keith: When. Okay let’s break these down real quick. First we have |
Seol: 진짜 (jinjja) |
Keith: Really followed by |
Seol: 예요 (yeyo) |
Keith: Is. Really is, really and now we have |
Seol: 언제 (eonje) |
Keith: When followed by |
Seol: 요 (yo) |
Keith: And as we went over, that’s the politeness particle. It just makes what he says polite. He can easily say 언제 (eonje) when but if you are saying 언제요 (eonjeyo) you are being polite. All right, now let’s finish this up real quick. |
Seol: 내일 (naeil). |
Keith: Tomorrow. |
Seol: 근데… (geunde…) |
Keith: But. |
Seol: 너 돈 있어 (neo don isseo)? |
Keith: And that’s a clincher. All right, first we have |
Seol: 너 (neo) |
Keith: You |
Seol: 돈 (don) |
Keith: Money. |
Seol: 있어 (isseo)? |
Keith: Exist or have. So you, money have. Do you have money and again, this should be fairly familiar because this is a review from one of our previous lessons. So something, something 있어(isseo)? do you have or something, something 있어 (isseo) dropping intonation to have. And remember, this is in the intimate politeness level. So if you want to make it polite, just add |
Seol: 요(yo). |
Keith: Yeah very simple. All right, so 설 씨, 돈 있어요? (seol ssi, don isseoyo?) |
Seol: 네, 돈 있어요 (ne, don isseoyo). |
Keith: Really? |
Seol: Yeah. |
Keith: You got money. |
Seol: Yeah you want some? |
Keith: Yeah I want some. |
Seol: But I don’t want to give it. No, I am kidding. Keith, 자동차 있어? (jadongcha isseo?) |
Keith: Keith, car exist or car have. 자동차 없어요. (jadongcha eopseoyo.) |
Seol: 자동차 없어요 (jadongcha eopseoyo)? Umm… |
Keith: So car not have and that’s the word to not have 없어 (eopseo) and once again to make it polite 없어요 (eopseoyo) and I was polite Seol was not. |
Seol: Because you don’t have a car. |
Outro
|
Keith: You are funny. All right, that’s going to do it for today’s lesson. Please leave us a comment, let us know if these review lessons are useful to you or not. If you think we can do without these, let us know and then we will adjust our lessons accordingly. All right, that’s going to do it. See you later. |
Seol: 다음에 봐요 (Daeume bwayo). |
