INTRODUCTION |
Seol: 안녕하세요. (Annyeonghaseyo.) |
Iseul: 안녕하세요. (Annyeonghaseyo.) |
Keith: Hey, Keith here. I Confess! |
Iseul: My god! What did he confess to? |
Keith: I don’t know. |
Iseul: Ryuji, what did you do? |
Keith: Wow... Iseul, you are really excited about this. |
Iseul: I am. |
Keith: Seol, you are not excited at all. |
Seol: I am. |
Keith: All right, well Iseul since you are so excited, why don’t you introduce the conversation to us? |
Iseul: The cop is interrogating Ryuji and Ryuji he just confessed. |
Keith: Are you sad? |
Iseul: I am. He gave in too easily. |
Keith: So we got a master criminal over here. She knows how to work around the cops. All right well, |
Iseul: I don’t think he did it. Whatever it was. I think he is innocent. |
Keith: You are a believer. That’s what you are. |
Iseul: I believe. |
Seol: Here the cop found something very dangerous, right? |
Iseul: He has evidence. |
Keith: And that’s why Ryuji confesses. |
Iseul: Ryuji... |
Keith: All right, let’s get into this. |

(1)형사: 이거는 뭐예요? (igeo-neun mwo-yeyo?) |

POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Keith: Seol, since Iseul is so into this conversation, why don’t we ask her how she felt? |
Seol: 어땠어요 (eottaesseoyo)? |
Iseul: I was excited. Excited for the new revelation, the new evidence. |
Keith: A new evidence, a knife. |
Iseul: A knife. |
Keith: Well the question is, is it a bloody knife? |
Iseul: I think it’s a vegetable knife. |
Keith: Well we are going to have to use our imaginations. So I am thinking a bloody knife and Iseul is thinking |
Iseul: A harmless knife. |
Keith: A harmless butter knife. |
Iseul: Butter knife yes. |
Keith: Seol, what are you imagining? |
Seol: I am imagining a bloody knife too. |
Keith: He is guilty. I confess. The title of this lesson. |
Seol: Okay. |
Keith: All right so let’s get into the vocab. First we have |
VOCAB LIST |
Iseul: 이거 (igeo). |
Keith: This. |
Iseul: 이거 (igeo) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 이거 (igeo)[natural native speed] |
Keith: Next is |
Iseul: 그거 (geugeo). |
Keith: That. |
Iseul: 그거 (geugeo) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 그거 (geugeo)[natural native speed] |
Keith: Next we have |
Iseul: 가방 (gabang). |
Keith: Bag. |
Iseul: 가방 (gabang) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 가방 (gabang) [natural native speed] |
Keith: And next is |
Iseul: 칼 (kal). |
Keith: Knife. |
Iseul: 칼 (kal)[slowly - broken down by syllable] 칼 (kal)[natural native speed] |
Keith: And next is |
Iseul: 제 (je). |
Keith: My. |
Iseul: 제 (je)[slowly - broken down by syllable] 제 (je) [natural native speed] |
Keith: Next we have |
Iseul: 이에요 (ieyo). |
Keith: Is, or or am. |
Iseul: 이에요 (ieyo) [slowly - broken down by syllable] 이에요 (ieyo) [natural native speed] |
VOCAB AND PHRASE USAGE |
Keith: All right. Let’s go over the vocab words a little bit. First we have 이거 (igeo)which we went over in our last lesson and |
Seol: 그거 (geugeo). |
Keith: That. Very simple, this and that. Translates exactly the same in Korean. And here we have 제 (je). It’s not a pronoun exactly. It’s a pronoun and a particle but it’s shortened. Well I think this is getting too much into the grammar. So we are just going to give you 제 (je) as my. |
Iseul: 제 (je) is used when you are referring to humble yourself in front of the person you respect or a person of higher standing. |
Keith: Yeah this is just used when you want to respect somebody. All right so let’s take a look into this conversation. Seol, can you start us off? |
Seol: 이거 뭐예요 (igeo mwoyeyo)? |
Keith: And we went over this in our last lesson. So this should sound very familiar. Let’s break it down real quick. |
Seol: 이거 (igeo) |
Keith: This. |
Seol: 뭐예요 (mwoyeyo)? |
Keith: What is – What is this. Next we have |
Iseul: 그거 (geugeo)? |
Keith: That. So obviously, if he is saying that, he is a little farther away from the item and the cop is closer to the item to whatever he is pointing at. 이거 뭐예요 (igeo mwoyeyo)? what is this and since he is little farther away, he is saying that. All right and next we have |
Iseul: 가방입니다 (gabangimnida). |
Keith: All right and this has two parts. The first part is |
Iseul: 가방 (gabang) |
Keith: Bag and next is |
Iseul: 입니다 (imnida). |
Keith: Is and once again, this is in the formal politeness level. So in our last lesson, we went over how to ask 이거 뭐예요 (igeo mwoyeyo) what is this. 이거 뭐예요 (igeo mwoyeyo) the answer maybe something maybe like a bag 가방 (gabang) followed by 입니다 (imnida) is. So literally it’s bag is. This is a bag. So if you are ever going to get an answer or if you want to make a statement, this is just something. Just say whatever you want to say and then 입니다 (imnida) is. Next we have |
Iseul: 제 가방입니다 (je gabangimnida). |
Keith: Okay let’s break it down a little bit. |
Iseul: 제 (je) |
Keith: My followed by |
Iseul: 가방 (gabang) |
Keith: Bag. |
Iseul: 입니다 (imnida). |
Keith: Is. So my bag is, this is my bag. So here you can use 제 (je) for anything, my something. 설은 제 여자친구입니다 (seoreun je yeojachinguimnida). |
Seol: No but yes. |
Keith: Wait! Wait! So yes or no? |
Seol: No but… |
Keith: Wait! Wait! Wait! Before we get into this, Iseul, can you explain what I just said? |
Iseul: Seol is my girlfriend. |
Keith: And I believe so. |
Seol: Yeah I am your girlfriend not a boyfriend. So I am your female friend. |
Keith: No, but girlfriend. |
Seol: But in Korea, we interpret it in female friend sometimes. So I am your female friend, yes. |
Keith: Okay well maybe this is getting into a little too much but 여자친구 (yeojachingu) that’s girlfriend. All right, so anytime you want to express possessiveness, say 제 (je) and then whatever you possess after that. So can you give us a couple of example sentences? |
Seol: Okay I have one good thing. 제 책입니다 (je chaegimnida). |
Keith: Let’s break that down real quick. |
Seol: 제 (je) |
Keith: My |
Seol: 책 (chaek) |
Keith: Book |
Seol: 입니다 (imnida). |
Keith: Is. This is my book. |
Iseul: 제 컴퓨터입니다 (je keompyuteoimnida). |
Keith: My computer is, this is my computer. |
Seol: 제 친구입니다 (je chinguimnida). |
Keith: My friend is, this is my friend. So here anytime you want to express possession, just say 제 (je) whatever you possess in the middle and then finish it off with 입니다 (imnida). So here it’s my bag is. All right, next we have |
Seol: 이거는요 (igeoneunyo)? |
Keith: And if you remember from our previous lessons, we had 는요 (neunyo) which means how about and then we have |
Seol: 이거 (igeo) |
Keith: This. So 이거는요(igeoneunyo) literally this how about. How about this. Let’s see how he reacts. |
Iseul: Oh Ryuji… 그거 (geugeo)? |
Keith: That. Once again, pay attention to the rising intonation here, it’s a question. That 그거 (geugeo)? |
Iseul: 칼이에요 (karieyo). |
Keith: First what we have is |
Iseul: 칼 (kal) |
Keith: Knife followed by |
Iseul: 이에요 (ieyo). |
Keith: Is and this is basically the same thing as 칼입니다 (karimnida) but it’s just in the standard politeness level and you are going to be hearing this 이에요 (ieyo) much more often than you would probably hear 입니다 (imnida). Let’s break it down real quick. |
Iseul: 칼 (kal) |
Keith: Knife. |
Iseul: 이에요 (ieyo). |
Keith: Is. That is a knife and now, Ryuji this is where his confession comes out. He says |
Iseul: 제 칼이에요 (je karieyo). |
Seol: Yeah. |
Keith: Well let’s break it down real quick. |
Iseul: 제 (je) |
Keith: My. |
Iseul: 칼 (kal) |
Keith: Knife. |
Iseul: 이에요 (ieyo). |
Keith: Is. Literally my knife is. We went over a couple of example sentences for 제 가방입니다 (je gabangimnida). Let’s give a couple of example sentences in the more commonly heard version of the copula 이에요 (ieyo). |
Iseul: 이슬이에요 (iseurieyo). |
Keith: 이슬 (iseul) her name followed by 이에요 (ieyo) am. |
Iseul: I am Iseul. |
Seol: 책이에요 (chaegieyo). |
Keith: Book is. How would you say my book? |
Seol: 제 책이에요 (je chaegieyo). |
Keith: My book is. |
Iseul: 엄마예요 (eommayeyo). |
Keith: Well that’s a little different. |
Seol: Not 이에요, 예요. (ieyo, yeyo.) |
Iseul: Yeah the 이 (i) disappeared. |
Keith: And why is that? |
Seol: Because 엄마 (eomma) ends in a vowel and we don’t need 이 (i) then. |
Keith: Right so it’s either 이에요 (ieyo) or 예요 (yeyo) and these two are exactly the same thing. They do exactly the same things. That 이에요 (ieyo) that 이 (i) is there to make the pronunciation a little easier. So whatever you want to say something is, that something if it ends in a consonant, you say 이에요(ieyo). If it ends in a vowel, it’s 예요(yeyo). It’s all about making the pronunciation a lot easier. We got through the story, how do you feel, Iseul? You look really depressed. |
Iseul: I do. Why did he have a knife in his bag? What did he do? What did he confess about? |
Keith: Well he confessed that it’s my knife. |
Iseul: But we still don’t know what crime. |
Keith: Well they are going to have to stick around to find out. |
Iseul: Stick around to find out. |
Seol: So we can expect some new series for Ryuji. |
Keith: Yeah this is a continuing series. This is going to go on for a long time. |
Seol: This is like to be continued right? |
Keith: 딴딴딴… (ttanttanttan…) |
Seol: Yeah. |
Outro
|
Keith: To be continued. All right, that's going to do it for today. |
Iseul: 안녕 (Annyeong). |
Seol: Bye bye. |
Keith: See you. |
