INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Lyn: And I'm Lyn. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 9. Asking About Time. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about time. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "When will you come?" |
Lyn: 언제 올 거예요? (eonje ol geoyeyo?) |
Lyn: [slow] 언제 올 거예요? (eonje ol geoyeyo?) |
Eric: The pattern for asking about time has 3 elements. First, a pronoun, "when." |
Lyn: 언제 (eonje). |
Eric: Second, a verb stem, "to come." |
Lyn: 오 (o). |
Eric: Third, a sentence ending to mean "will." |
Lyn: ㄹ 거예요 (l geoyeyo). |
Eric: Altogether, we have.. "When will you come?" |
Lyn: 언제 올 거예요? (eonje ol geoyeyo?) [slow] 언제 올 거예요? (eonje ol geoyeyo?) [normal] 언제 올 거예요? (eonje ol geoyeyo?) |
Eric: To say "will do something" in Korean, simply use the verb-stem as we have in this example, and say |
Lyn: ㄹ 거예요. (rieul geoyeyo) |
Eric: Let’s say you want to say “will go.” The verb-stem of the verb meaning “to go “ is |
Lyn: 가- (ga-) |
Eric: And you can add... |
Lyn: ㄹ 거예요 (rieul geoyeyo) |
Eric: to this verb-stem. All together, we have… |
Lyn: 갈 거예요 (gal geoyeyo). |
Eric: Let’s listen to our example again. |
Lyn: 언제 올 거예요? (eonje ol geoyeyo?) |
Eric: So remember to ask about time, simply use... |
Lyn: ㄹ 거예요 (l geoyeyo) |
Erin: After a verb-stem. |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "When will you go?" First, a pronoun, "where." |
Lyn: 언제 (eonje). |
Eric: Second, a verb stem, "to go." |
Lyn: 가 (ga). |
Eric: Third, a sentence ending, "will." |
Lyn: ㄹ 거예요 (rieul geoyeyo). |
Eric: Altogether we have.. |
Lyn: 언제 갈 거예요? (eonje gal geoyeyo?) [slow] 언제 갈 거예요? (eonje gal geoyeyo?) [normal] 언제 갈 거예요? (eonje gal geoyeyo?) |
Eric: "When will you go?" |
[pause] |
Lyn: 언제 갈 거예요? (eonje gal geoyeyo?) |
Eric: How do you say - "When will you eat?" To give you a hint, the verb-stem "to eat" in Korean is.. |
Lyn: 먹- (meok). [slow] 먹- (meok). [normal] 먹- (meok). |
Eric: “When will you eat?” |
Erin: Since it ends in a consonant, make sure to use… |
Lyn: 을 거예요 (eul geoyeyo.) |
[pause] |
Lyn: 언제 먹을 거예요? (eonje meogeul geoyeyo?) [slow] 언제 먹을 거예요? (eonje meogeul geoyeyo?) [normal] 언제 먹을 거예요? (eonje meogeul geoyeyo?) |
[pause] |
Lyn: 언제 먹을 거예요? (eonje meogeul geoyeyo?) |

Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Korean. Here we go. |
Eric: "When will you come?" |
[pause] |

[pause] |
Lyn: 언제 올 거예요? (eonje ol geoyeyo?) |
Eric: "When will you go?" |
[pause] |
Lyn: 언제 갈 거예요? (eonje gal geoyeyo?) |
[pause] |
Lyn: 언제 갈 거예요? (eonje gal geoyeyo?) |
Eric: "When will you eat?" |
[pause] |
Lyn: 언제 먹을 거예요? (eonje meogeul geoyeyo?) |
[pause] |
Lyn: 언제 먹을 거예요? (eonje meogeul geoyeyo?) |
Outro
|
Eric: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for asking about time, as in.. |

Eric: meaning "When will you come?" |
Eric: You can find more vocab or phrases that go with this sentence pattern in the lesson notes. So please be sure to check them out on KoreanClass101.com. Thanks everyone, see you next time! |
