| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about a choice. |
| PATTERN |
| Eric: For example, |
| Eric: "Which one is more delicious?" |
| Lyn: 어느 것이 더 맛있어요? (eoneu geosi deo masisseoyo?) |
| Lyn: [slow] 어느 것이 더 맛있어요? (eoneu geosi deo masisseoyo?) |
| Eric: The pattern for asking about a choice has 4 elements. First, a phrase, "which thing." |
| Lyn: 어느 것 (eoneu goet). |
| Eric: Second, a subject marking particle. |
| Lyn: 이 (i). |
| Eric: Third, an adverb, "more." |
| Lyn: 더 (deo). |
| Eric: And last, an adjective "delicious." |
| Lyn: 맛있어요 (masisseoyo). |
| Eric: Altogether, we have.. "Which one is more delicious?" |
| Lyn: 어느 것이 더 맛있어요? (eoneu geosi deo masisseoyo?) [slow] 어느 것이 더 맛있어요? (eoneu geosi deo masisseoyo?) [normal] 어느 것이 더 맛있어요? (eoneu geosi deo masisseoyo?) |
| Eric: Do you remember the rules that we learned earlier about how to combine a verb-stem with... |
| Lyn: 요 (yo) |
| Eric: … the sentence ending? Let's review using this sentence.. First, this sentence has the verb-stem |
| Lyn: 맛있- (masit-)... |
| Eric: And its last syllable doesn't have… |
| Lyn: ㅏ (a) or ㅗ (o) vowel. |
| Eric: So you need to add… |
| Lyn: 어 (eo) |
| Eric: between the verb-stem and the sentence-ending particle. All together, you can say… |
| Lyn: 맛있어요 (masisseoyo). |
| Eric: “Delicious.” Don't worry if it sounds complicated. You'll get used to it. Let’s hear the sentence once again. |
| Lyn: 어느 것이 더 맛있어요? (eoneu geosi deo masisseoyo?) |
| Eric: Also remember that to ask about someone's preference, simply add the adverb |
| Lyn: 더 |
| Eric: which means "more" before the sentence ending. |
| Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Which shirt is prettier?" First, a phrase, "which shirt." |
| Lyn: 어느 셔츠 (eoneu syeocheu). |
| Eric: Second, a subject marking particle. |
| Lyn: 가 (ga). |
| Eric: Third, an adverb, "more." |
| Lyn: 더 (deo). |
| Eric: And last, an adjective "pretty." |
| Lyn: 예뻐요 (yeppeoyo). |
| Eric: Altogether we have.. |
