INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Lyn: And I'm Lyn. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 7. Asking for Information About Something. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking for information about something. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "What is your name?" |
Lyn: 이름이 뭐예요? (ireumi mwoyeyo?) |
Lyn: [slow] 이름이 뭐예요? (ireumi mwoyeyo?) |
Eric: The pattern for asking for information about something has 3 elements. First, a noun, "name." |
Lyn: 이름 (ireum). |
Eric: Second, a subject marking particle. |
Lyn: 이 (i). |
Eric: Third, a phrase, "what is." |
Lyn: 뭐예요 (mwoyeyo). |
Eric: Altogether, we have... "What is your name?" |
Lyn: 이름이 뭐예요? (ireumi mwoyeyo?) [slow] 이름이 뭐예요? (ireumi mwoyeyo?) [normal] 이름이 뭐예요? (ireumi mwoyeyo?) |
Eric: When you’re asking for information about something, first, specify what you need to know. Then say the subject marking particle. Finally, say the phrase... |
Lyn: 뭐예요 (mwoyeyo) |
Eric: meaning "what is." All together, “What’s your name?” is... |
Lyn: 이름이 뭐예요? (ireumi mwoyeyo?) |
Eric: So remember that to ask for information about something, simply end the sentence with |
Lyn: 뭐예요 (mwoyeyo) |
Eric: meaning "what is." |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "What is the phone number?" First, a noun, "phone number." |
Lyn: 전화번호 (jeonhwabeonho). |
Eric: Second, a subject marking particle. |
Lyn: 가 (ga). |
Eric: Third, a phrase "what is." |
Lyn: 뭐예요 (mwoyeyo). |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Lyn: 전화번호가 뭐예요? (jeonhwabeonhoga mwoyeyo?) [slow] 전화번호가 뭐예요? (jeonhwabeonhoga mwoyeyo?) [normal] 전화번호가 뭐예요? (jeonhwabeonhoga mwoyeyo?) |
Eric: "What is the phone number?" |
[pause] |
Lyn: 전화번호가 뭐예요? (jeonhwabeonhoga mwoyeyo?) |
Eric: How do you say - "What is your major?" To give you a hint, "major" in Korean is.. |
Lyn: 전공 (jeongong). [slow] 전공 (jeongong). [normal] 전공 (jeongong). |
Eric: “What is your major?” |
[pause] |
Lyn: 전공이 뭐예요? (jeongongi mwoyeyo?) [slow] 전공이 뭐예요? (jeongongi mwoyeyo?) [normal] 전공이 뭐예요? (jeongongi mwoyeyo?) |
[pause] |
Lyn: 전공이 뭐예요? (Jeongongi mwoyeyo?) |
