INTRODUCTION |
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana. |
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi. |
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 50. Talking About Assumptions. |
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing assumptions. |
PATTERN |
Dana: For example, |
Dana: "I assume that you finished the report." |
Jaehwi: λ ν¬νΈ λ€ νμ κ² κ°μμ. (lepoteu da haesseul geot gattayo.) |
Jaehwi: [slow] λ ν¬νΈ λ€ νμ κ² κ°μμ. (lepoteu da haesseul geot gattayo.) |
Dana: The pattern for expressing assumptions has three elements. First, the noun for "report". |
Jaehwi: λ ν¬νΈ (lepoteu). |
Dana: Second, the adverb βall.β |
Jaehwi: λ€ (da). |
Dana: Third, the sentence ending. |
Jaehwi: You can have a verb plus γΉ κ² κ°μμ(l geot gattayo) or μ κ² κ°μμ(eul geot gattayo). |
Jaehwi: νμ κ² κ°μμ (haesseul geot gattayo). |
Dana: Altogether, we have... "I assume that you finished the report." |
Jaehwi: λ ν¬νΈ λ€ νμ κ² κ°μμ. (lepoteu da haesseul geot gattayo.) |
[slow] λ ν¬νΈ λ€ νμ κ² κ°μμ. (lepoteu da haesseul geot gattayo.) |
[normal] λ ν¬νΈ λ€ νμ κ² κ°μμ. (lepoteu da haesseul geot gattayo.) |
Dana: You can use⦠|
Jaehwi: -μμ κ² κ°μμ (at eul geot gattayo) or μμ κ² κ°μμ (eot eul geot gattayo) or μμ κ² κ°μμ (yeot eul geot gattayo) |
Jaehwi: These are polite phrases used when one thinks or assumes that something has been done. |
Dana: The object is followed by the adverb, βall; everything,β |
Jaehwi: λ€(da) |
Dana: followed by the supposition in past tense |
Jaehwi: a verb plus μ μ κ² κ°μμ(at eul geot gattayo) or μμ κ² κ°μμ(eot eul geot gattayo). |
Dana: Once again, "I assume that you finished the report" is... |
Jaehwi: λ ν¬νΈ λ€ νμ κ² κ°μμ. (lepoteu da haesseul geot gattayo.) |
Dana: So remember, use the sentence ending... |
Jaehwi: -μμ κ² κ°μμ (at eul geot gattayo) or μμ κ² κ°μμ (eot eul geot gattayo) or μμ κ² κ°μμ (yeot eul geot gattayo) |
Dana: ...after the verb when you want to create a sentence that shows the assumption of the speaker regarding an action done by the other party. |
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "I assume that you are finished studying." First, the noun for "study". |
Jaehwi: κ³΅λΆ (gongbu). |
Dana: Second, the adverb, βall.β |
Jaehwi: λ€ (da). |
Dana: Third, the sentence ending... |
Jaehwi: ...the verb plus γΉ κ² κ°μμ(l geot gattayo) or μ κ² κ°μμ(eul geot gattayo). |
Jaehwi: νμ κ² κ°μ (haesseul geot gatta). |
Dana: Altogether we have... |
Jaehwi: κ³΅λΆ λ€ νμ κ² κ°μ. (gongbu da haesseul geot gatta.) |
[slow] κ³΅λΆ λ€ νμ κ² κ°μ. (gongbu da haesseul geot gatta.) |
[normal] κ³΅λΆ λ€ νμ κ² κ°μ. (gongbu da haesseul geot gatta.) |
Dana: "I assume that you are finished studying." |
[pause] |
Jaehwi: κ³΅λΆ λ€ νμ κ² κ°μ. (gongbu da haesseul geot gatta.) |
Dana: How do you say, "I assume that you finished the movie."? To give you a hint, "watch" is... |
Jaehwi: λ³΄λ€ (boda). [slow] λ³΄λ€ (boda). [normal] λ³΄λ€ (boda). |
Dana: "I assume that you finished the movie." |
[pause] |
Jaehwi: μν λ€ λ΄€μ κ² κ°μμ. (yeonghwa da bwasseul geot gatayo) |
[slow] μν λ€ λ΄€μ κ² κ°μμ. (yeonghwa da bwasseul geot gatayo) |
