Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 50. Talking About Assumptions.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing assumptions.
PATTERN
Dana: For example,
Dana: "I assume that you finished the report."
Jaehwi: 레포트 λ‹€ ν–ˆμ„ 것 κ°™μ•„μš”. (lepoteu da haesseul geot gattayo.)
Jaehwi: [slow] 레포트 λ‹€ ν–ˆμ„ 것 κ°™μ•„μš”. (lepoteu da haesseul geot gattayo.)
Dana: The pattern for expressing assumptions has three elements. First, the noun for "report".
Jaehwi: 레포트 (lepoteu).
Dana: Second, the adverb β€œall.”
Jaehwi: λ‹€ (da).
Dana: Third, the sentence ending.
Jaehwi: You can have a verb plus γ„Ή 것 κ°™μ•„μš”(l geot gattayo) or 을 것 κ°™μ•„μš”(eul geot gattayo).
Jaehwi: ν–ˆμ„ 것 κ°™μ•„μš” (haesseul geot gattayo).
Dana: Altogether, we have... "I assume that you finished the report."
Jaehwi: 레포트 λ‹€ ν–ˆμ„ 것 κ°™μ•„μš”. (lepoteu da haesseul geot gattayo.)

Jaehwi: These are polite phrases used when one thinks or assumes that something has been done.
Dana: The object is followed by the adverb, β€œall; everything,”
Jaehwi: λ‹€(da)
Dana: followed by the supposition in past tense
Jaehwi: a verb plus μ•˜ 을 것 κ°™μ•„μš”(at eul geot gattayo) or μ—ˆμ„ 것 κ°™μ•„μš”(eot eul geot gattayo).
Dana: Once again, "I assume that you finished the report" is...

Dana: So remember, use the sentence ending...

Dana: ...after the verb when you want to create a sentence that shows the assumption of the speaker regarding an action done by the other party.
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "I assume that you are finished studying." First, the noun for "study".
