INTRODUCTION |
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana. |
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi. |
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 48. Talking About Continuous Actions. |
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for discussing something that one has been doing. |
PATTERN |
Dana: For example, |
Dana: "I have been studying since this morning." |
Jaehwi: 아침부터 공부하고 있어요. (achimbuteo gongbuhago isseoyo.) |
Jaehwi: [slow] 아침부터 공부하고 있어요. (achimbuteo gongbuhago isseoyo.) |
Dana: The pattern for discussing something that one has been doing has four elements. First, the noun for “morning.” |
Jaehwi: 아침 (achim). |
Dana: Second, the particle “from.” |
Jaehwi: 부터 (buteo). |
Dana: Third, the verb stem for “study.” |
Jaehwi: 공부하 (gongbuha). |
Dana: And last, the present progressive, |
Jaehwi: 고 있어요 (go isseoyo). |
Dana: Altogether, we have... "I have been studying since this morning." |
Jaehwi: 아침부터 공부하고 있어요. (achimbuteo gongbuhago isseoyo.) |
[slow] 아침부터 공부하고 있어요. (achimbuteo gongbuhago isseoyo.) |
[normal] 아침부터 공부하고 있어요. (achimbuteo gongbuhago isseoyo.) |
Dana: The pattern... |
Jaehwi: ~고 있어요(go isseoyo) |
Dana: ...is used to discuss something that one has been doing. You attach the particle… |
Jaehwi: 부터(buteo) |
Dana: to the noun to indicate when the action started, followed by the verb stem plus… |
Jaehwi: 고 있어요(go isseoyo). |
Jaehwi: 아침부터 공부하고 있어요. (achimbuteo gongbuhago isseoyo.) |
Dana: So remember, to discuss something that you have been doing, or in present progressive tense, use the phrase... |
Jaehwi: ~고 있어요(go isseoyo) |
Dana: ...at the end of the sentence. |
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "I have been working from one o'clock." First, the noun for “one o'clock.” |
Jaehwi: 한 시 (han si). |
Dana: Second, the particle “from.” |
Jaehwi: 부터 (buteo). |
Dana: Third, the verb stem for “work.” |
Jaehwi: 일하 (ilha). |
Dana: And last, the present progressive |
Jaehwi: 고 있어요 (go isseoyo). |
Dana: Altogether we have... |
Jaehwi: 한 시부터 일하고 있어요. (han sibuteo ilhago isseoyo.) |
[slow] 한 시부터 일하고 있어요. (han sibuteo ilhago isseoyo.) |
[normal] 한 시부터 일하고 있어요. (han sibuteo ilhago isseoyo.) |
Dana: "I have been working from one o'clock." |
[pause] |
Jaehwi: 한 시부터 일하고 있어요. (han sibuteo ilhago isseoyo.) |
Dana: How do you say, "I have been cooking since this afternoon."? To give you a hint, "afternoon” and “cook" are... |
Jaehwi: 오후, 요리 (ohu, yori). [slow] 오후, 요리 (ohu, yori). [normal] 오후, 요리 (ohu, yori). |
Dana: "I have been cooking since this afternoon." |
[pause] |
Jaehwi: 오후부터 요리하고 있어요. (ohubuteo yorihago isseoyo) |
[slow] 오후부터 요리하고 있어요. (ohubuteo yorihago isseoyo) |
[normal] 오후부터 요리하고 있어요. (ohubuteo yorihago isseoyo) |
[pause] |
Jaehwi: 오후부터 요리하고 있어요. (ohubuteo yorihago isseoyo) |
