| Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn the sentence pattern for rejecting an invitation. |
| PATTERN |
| Dana: For example, |
| Dana: "I'm afraid I won't be able to assist." |
| Jaehwi: 못 도와줄 것 같아요. (mot dowajul geot gattayo.) |
| Jaehwi: [slow] 못 도와줄 것 같아요. (mot dowajul geot gattayo.) |
| Dana: The pattern for rejecting an invitation has three elements. First, the adverb meaning "not be able to"... |
| Jaehwi: 못 (mot). |
| Dana: Second, the verb stem “to help.” |
| Jaehwi: 도와주 (dowaju). |
| Dana: Third, the sentence ending for “probability.” |
| Jaehwi: ㄹ 것 같아요 (l geot gattayo) or 을 것 같아요 (eul geot gattayo). |
| Dana: Altogether, we have... "I'm afraid I won't be able to assist." |
| Jaehwi: 못 도와줄 것 같아요. (mot dowajul geot gattayo.) |

| Dana: ...is used to turn down an invitation. Use the adverb… |
| Jaehwi: 못(mot), |
| Dana: followed by the verb stem of the action that you are turning down. Finish the sentence with the sentence ending for “probability”, |
| Jaehwi: ㄹ 것 같다 (l geot gatda) or 을 것 같다(eul geot gatda). |
| Jaehwi: 못 도와줄 것 같아요. (mot dowajul geot gattayo.) |
| Dana: So remember, when rejecting an invitation, use this phrase... |
| Jaehwi: 못 ~ㄹ 것 같다(mot ~l geot gatda) or 못 ~을 것 같다 (mot ~eul geot gatda) |
| Dana: Here is another example meaning, "I'm afraid I won't be able to go." First, the adverb “not.” |
