INTRODUCTION |
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana. |
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi. |
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 43. Tag Questions. |
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for seeking confirmation about a statement. |
PATTERN |
Dana: For example, |
Dana: "It is cold, right?" |
Jaehwi: 춥다, 그렇지? (chubda, geureochi?) |
Jaehwi: [slow] 춥다, 그렇지? (chubda, geureochi?) |
Dana: The pattern for seeking confirmation about a statement has two elements. First, the adjective for "cold". |
Jaehwi: 춥다 (chubda). |
Dana: Second, confirmation. |
Jaehwi: 그렇지 (geureochi). |
Dana: Altogether, we have... "It is cold, right?" |
Jaehwi: 춥다, 그렇지? (chubda, geureochi?) |
[slow] 춥다, 그렇지? (chubda, geureochi?) |
[normal] 춥다, 그렇지? (chubda, geureochi?) |
Dana: Here, we have the particle... |
Jaehwi: 지(ji)? |
Dana: You can use it behind the adjective when you want to confirm a fact with the listener. |
Jaehwi: You start with an adjective 춥다(chubdda), "cold," followed by the word stem 그렇(geureot), "to be like," and the confirmation particle 지(ji) |
Dana: When combined like this, it’s used to seek confirmation, as in "right?" |
Jaehwi: 춥다, 그렇지? (chubda, geureochi?) |
Dana: So remember, use this phrase: |
Jaehwi: Adjective plus 그렇지 (geureochi)? |
Dana: when you seek confirmation from somebody else. |
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "It's delicious, isn't it?" First, the adjective for "delicious". |
Jaehwi: 맛있다 (massida). |
Dana: Second, the confirmation word. |
Jaehwi: 그렇지 (geureochi). |
Dana: Altogether we have... |
Jaehwi: 맛있다, 그렇지? (massida, geureochi?) |
[slow] 맛있다, 그렇지? (massida, geureochi?) |
[normal] 맛있다, 그렇지? (massida, geureochi?) |
Dana: "It's delicious, isn't it?" |
[pause] |
Jaehwi: 맛있다, 그렇지? ( massida, geureochi?) |
Dana: How do you say, "It's sad, isn't it?"? To give you a hint, "sad" is... |
Jaehwi: 슬프다 (seulpeuda). [slow] 슬프다 (seulpeuda). [normal] 슬프다 (seulpeuda). |
Dana: "It's sad, isn't it?" |
[pause] |
Jaehwi: 슬프다, 그렇지? (seulpeuda, geureochi?) |
[slow] 슬프다, 그렇지? (seulpeuda, geureochi?) |
[normal] 슬프다, 그렇지? (seulpeuda, geureochi?) |
[pause] |
Jaehwi: 슬프다, 그렇지? (seulpeuda, geureochi?) |
