INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi everyone, I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 40. Expressing Uncertainty.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing possibility.
PATTERN
Dana: For example,
Dana: "I may come back again."
Jaehwi: ๋‹ค์‹œ ์˜ฌ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
Jaehwi: [slow] ๋‹ค์‹œ ์˜ฌ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
Dana: The pattern for expressing possibility has three elements. First, an adverb "again".
Jaehwi: ๋‹ค์‹œ (dasi).
Dana: Second, verb stem plus โ€œmay have toโ€
Jaehwi: ใ„น์ง€๋„ (ljido) or ์„์ง€๋„ (euljido).
Jaehwi: ์˜ฌ์ง€๋„ (oljido).
Dana: Third, polite tense of โ€œdo not knowโ€.
Jaehwi: ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š” (mollayo).
Dana: Altogether, we have... "I may come back again."
Jaehwi: ๋‹ค์‹œ ์˜ฌ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
[slow] ๋‹ค์‹œ ์˜ฌ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
[normal] ๋‹ค์‹œ ์˜ฌ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
Dana: We have the phrase...
Jaehwi: ใ„น์ง€๋„ ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋‹ค (ljido moreuda) or ์„์ง€๋„ ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋‹ค (euljido moreuda)
Dana: You can use it when expressing possibility or uncertainty. You attach the phrase to the verb stem and use it at the end of a sentence. In the sample sentence, the adverb "later" is used, followed by the verb stem "come" and "may do"...
Jaehwi: ใ„น์ง€๋„ ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋‹ค (ljido moreuda) or ์„์ง€๋„ ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋‹ค (euljido moreuda)
Dana: Altogether we haveโ€ฆ
Jaehwi: ๋‹ค์‹œ ์˜ฌ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (dasi oljido mollayo.)
Dana: So remember, use the phrase...
Jaehwi: ใ„น์ง€๋„ ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋‹ค (ljido moreuda) or ์„์ง€๋„ ๋ชจ๋ฅด๋‹ค (euljido moreuda)
Dana: ...at the end of the sentence when you want to express possibility or uncertainty.
Dana: Here is another example meaning, "I may need to go to the hospital."
Dana: First, nounโ€ฆ
Jaehwi: ๋ณ‘์› (byeongwon)
Dana: plus the place marking particle.
Jaehwi: ์— (e).
Dana: Which together sound like
Jaehwi: ๋ณ‘์›์— (byeongwone).
Dana: Second, the verb stem plus โ€œmay have toโ€
Jaehwi: ใ„น์ง€๋„ (ljido) or ์„์ง€๋„ (euljido).
Dana: In this case, the verb-stem ends in a vowel, so you can use the first one and sayโ€ฆ
Jaehwi: ๊ฐˆ์ง€๋„ (galjido).
Dana: Third, polite tense of โ€œdo not know.โ€
Jaehwi: ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š” (mollayo).
Dana: Altogether we have...
Jaehwi: ๋ณ‘์›์— ๊ฐˆ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (byeongwone galjido mollayo)
[slow] ๋ณ‘์›์— ๊ฐˆ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (byeongwone galjido mollayo)
[normal] ๋ณ‘์›์— ๊ฐˆ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (byeongwone galjido mollayo)
Dana: "I may need to go to the hospital."
[pause]
Jaehwi: ๋ณ‘์›์— ๊ฐˆ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (byeongwone galjido mollayo)
Dana: How do you say, "I may go on a date."? To give you a hint, "date" is...
Jaehwi: ๋ฐ์ดํŠธ (deiteu). [slow] ๋ฐ์ดํŠธ (deiteu). [normal] ๋ฐ์ดํŠธ (deiteu).
Dana: "I may go on a date."
[pause]
Jaehwi: ๋ฐ์ดํŠธ ํ• ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (deiteu haljido mollayo)
[slow] ๋ฐ์ดํŠธ ํ• ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (deiteu haljido mollayo)
[normal] ๋ฐ์ดํŠธ ํ• ์ง€๋„ ๋ชฐ๋ผ์š”. (deiteu haljido mollayo)
