INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi, everyone. I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 37 - Requesting Permission.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for requesting permission.
PATTERN
Dana: For example...
Dana: "May I come in?"
Jaehwi: 들어가도 될까요? (deureulgado doelkkayo?)
Jaehwi: [slow] 들어가도 될까요? (deureulgado doelkkayo?)
Dana: The pattern for requesting permission has 3 elements. First, there’s the verb stem plus the connective particle,
Jaehwi: 아/어/여 도 (a/eo/yo do).
Jaehwi: 들어가도 (deureulgado).
Dana: Second, the verb stem (possible).
Jaehwi: 되 (dwe).
Dana: Third, there’s the particle (requesting permission).
Jaehwi: -ㄹ까요 (lkkayo).
Dana: All together, we have "May I come in?"
Jaehwi: 들어가도 될까요? (deureulgado doelkkayo?) [slow] 들어가도 될까요? (deureulgado doelkkayo?) [normal] 들어가도 될까요? (deureulgado doelkkayo?)
Dana: The phase…
Jaehwi: ~아/어/여 도 (a/eo/yo do) ~ㄹ까요 (lkkayo)
Dana: is used when asking permission to do something. The sentence starts with the action that you are requesting permission for, so you would add the connective particle…
Jaehwi: 아/어/여 도 (a/eo/yo do).
Dana: after the verb stem. It’s followed by…
Jaehwi: doelkkayo, which is a phrase used to ask for permission.
Jaehwi: 들어가도 될까요? (deureulgado doelkkayo?)
Dana: So remember, use the formula: verb plus
Jaehwi: 아/어/여 도 될까요 (a/eo/yo do doelkkayo)
Dana: when requesting permission to do an action.
Dana: Here’s another example, meaning "May I make a call?" First, you say the verb stem plus the connective particle…
Jaehwi: 아/어/여 도 (a/eo/yo do).
Jaehwi: 전화해도 (jeonhwahaedo).
Dana: Second, add the verb stem (possible).
Jaehwi: 되 (dwe).
Dana: Third, say the particle (requesting permission).
Jaehwi: -ㄹ까요 (lkkayo).
Dana: All together, we have...
Jaehwi: 전화해도 될까요? (jeonhwahaedo doelkkayo?) [slow] 전화해도 될까요? (jeonhwahaedo doelkkayo?) [normal] 전화해도 될까요? (jeonhwahaedo doelkkayo?)
Dana: "May I make a call?"
[pause]
Jaehwi: 전화해도 될까요? (jeonhwahaedo doelkkayo?)
Dana: How do you say "May I eat?" To give you a hint, "eat" is...
Jaehwi: 먹다 (meogda). [slow] 먹다 (meogda). [normal] 먹다 (meogda).
Dana: "May I eat?"
[pause]
Jaehwi: 밥 먹어도 될까요? (bap meogeodo doelkkayo) [slow] 밥 먹어도 될까요? (bap meogeodo doelkkayo) [normal] 밥 먹어도 될까요? (bap meogeodo doelkkayo)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 밥 먹어도 될까요? (bap meogeodo doelkkayo)

Dana: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I'll tell you the English equivalent of the phrase and you say it in Korean. Here we go.
Dana: "May I come in?"
[pause]
Jaehwi: 들어가도 될까요? (deureulgado doelkkayo?)

Jaehwi: 들어가도 될까요? (deureulgado doelkkayo?)

Outro

Dana: Okay. That's all for this lesson. You learned a pattern for requesting permission, as in...

Dana: ...meaning "May I come in?"
