INTRODUCTION |
Dana: Hi, everyone. I'm Dana. |
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi. |
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 35 - Comparing Different Objects. |
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for comparing two different objects. |
PATTERN |

Jaehwi: [slow] 당신의 가방은 제 것보다 커요. (dangshineui gabangeun je geotboda keoyo.) |
Dana: The pattern for comparing two different objects has 4 elements. First, there’s the possessive pronoun, noun plus |
Jaehwi: 의 (eui). |
Jaehwi: 당신의 (dangsineui). |
Dana: Second, you add the noun plus the topic marking particle… |
Jaehwi: 은 (eun). |
Jaehwi: 가방은 (gabangeun). |
Dana: Third, possessive pronoun, noun plus |
Jaehwi: 것 (geot) |
Dana: plus the comparison particle. |
Jaehwi: 보다 (boda). |
Jaehwi: 제 것보다 (je geotboda). |
Dana: And last, adjective “big” plus the suffix… |

Dana: This phrase is used when comparing two things, traits, etc. that are different. It is used to show contrast. By using a possessive pronoun before the object, you indicate who the item, up for comparison, belongs to. After the object of the sentence, you add the comparison particle… |
Jaehwi: 보다 (boda), |
Dana: followed by the second thing being compared. If used in a polite sentence, you end the sentence using the polite suffix… |
