INTRODUCTION
Dana: Hi, everyone. I'm Dana.
Jaehwi: And I'm Jaehwi.
Dana: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 33 - Saying You Want to Do Something.
Dana: In this lesson, you'll learn a sentence pattern for expressing the desire to do something.
PATTERN
Dana: For example...
Dana: "I would like to drink coffee."
Jaehwi: 커피 마실래. (keopi mashilrae.)
Jaehwi: [slow] 커피 마실래. (keopi mashilrae.)
Dana: The pattern for expressing the desire to do something has 3 elements. First, there’s the noun “coffee”.
Jaehwi: 커피 (keopi).
Dana: Second, the verb stem.
Jaehwi: 마시 (masi).
Dana: Third, the sentence-ending particle “want to”.
Jaehwi: ㄹ래 (lrae).
Dana: All together, we have "I would like to drink coffee."
Jaehwi: 커피 마실래. (keopi mashilrae.) [slow] 커피 마실래. (keopi mashilrae.) [normal] 커피 마실래. (keopi mashilrae.)
Dana: This grammatical structure is used to express the speaker's intention for the future. You start with a noun followed by the verb stem of the action you desire to do in the future, followed by the particle…
Jaehwi: ㄹ/을래 (l/eulrae).
Dana: If the verb stem ends with a vowel, you use...
Jaehwi: ㄹ래 (lrae).
Dana: and when it ends with a consonant you add
Jaehwi: 을래 (eulrae).
Jaehwi: 커피 마실래. (keopi mashilrae.)
Dana: So remember, simply add ㄹ/을래 (l/eulrae) after the verb stem to express your desire to do something.
Dana: Here is another example, meaning "I want to eat rice." First, there’s the noun “rice”.
Jaehwi: 밥 (bap).
Dana: Second, the verb stem.
Jaehwi: 먹 (meok).
Dana: Third, the sentence-ending particle “want to”.
Jaehwi: 을래 (eulrae).
Dana: All together, we have...
Jaehwi: 밥 먹을래. (bap meoggeulrae) [slow] 밥 먹을래. (bap meoggeulrae) [normal] 밥 먹을래. (bap meoggeulrae)
Dana: "I want to eat rice," or “I’ll have rice.”
[pause]
Jaehwi: 밥 먹을래. (bap meoggeulrae)
Dana: How do you say "I want to watch a movie"? To give you a hint, "want to see" is...
Jaehwi: 볼래 (bollae). [slow] 볼래 (bollae). [normal] 볼래 (bollae).
Dana: "I want to watch a movie."
[pause]
Jaehwi: 영화 볼래. (yeonghwa bollae) [slow] 영화 볼래. (yeonghwa bollae) [normal] 영화 볼래. (yeonghwa bollae)
[pause]
Jaehwi: 영화 볼래. (yeonghwa bollae)
