INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Lyn: And I'm Lyn. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 24. Showing Your Gratitude. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing gratitude to someone for doing something. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "Thanks for doing me a favor." |
Lyn: ๋ถํ ๋ค์ด ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (butak deureo jwoseo gomawoyo.) |
Lyn: [slow] ๋ถํ ๋ค์ด ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (butak deureo jwoseo gomawoyo.) |
Eric: The pattern for expressing gratitude to someone for doing something has 4 elements. First, the noun, "request." |
Lyn: ๋ถํ (butak). |
Eric: Second, the verb stem, "to accept." |
Lyn: ๋ค (deul). |
Eric: Third, the phrase, "for doing." |
Lyn: ์ด ์ค์ (eo jwoseo). |
Eric: And last, the expression, "thanks" in a polite way. |
Lyn: ๊ณ ๋ง์์ (gomawoyo). |
Eric: Altogether, we have... "Thanks for doing me a favor." or literally โthank you for accepting my request.โ |
Lyn: ๋ถํ ๋ค์ด ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (butak deureo jwoseo gomawoyo.) [slow] ๋ถํ ๋ค์ด ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (butak deureo jwoseo gomawoyo.) [normal] ๋ถํ ๋ค์ด ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (butak deureo jwoseo gomawoyo.) |
Eric: When you want to express your appreciation with the reason, you can use the phrase... |
Lyn: -์ด ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์ (eo jwoseo gomawoyo). |
Eric: It literally means โThank you for giving.โ This phrase has the verb... |
Lyn: ์ฃผ๋ค (juda) |
Eric: which means "to give.โ With this, you can put the reason why you want to appreciate. For example, if you appreciate the other because the person accepted your request, you can use the verb-stem |
Lyn: ๋ถํ ๋ค- (butak deul) |
Eric: Which means โto accept someoneโs requestโ and say... |
Lyn: ๋ถํ ๋ค์ด ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (butak deureo jwoseo gomawoyo.) |
Eric: So remember that to thank someone for doing something, simply state why you are thankful with the verb stem and end the sentence with |
Lyn: ์ด ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์ (eo jwoseo gomawoyo). |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Thanks for teaching me Korean." First, the noun, "Korean." |
Lyn: ํ๊ตญ์ด (hangugeo). |
Eric: Second, the verb stem, "to teach." |
Lyn: ๊ฐ๋ฅด์น (gareuchi). |
Eric: Third, the phrase, "for doing." |
Lyn: ์ด ์ค์ (eo jwoseo). |
Eric: And last, the expression, "thanks." |
Lyn: ๊ณ ๋ง์์ (gomawoyo). |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Lyn: ํ๊ตญ์ด ๊ฐ๋ฅด์ณ ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (hangugeo gareuchyeo jwoseo gomawoyo.) [slow] ํ๊ตญ์ด ๊ฐ๋ฅด์ณ ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (hangugeo gareuchyeo jwoseo gomawoyo.) [normal] ํ๊ตญ์ด ๊ฐ๋ฅด์ณ ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (hangugeo gareuchyeo jwoseo gomawoyo.) |

Eric: How do you say - "Thanks for fixing my computer." To give you a hint, the verb-stem "to fix" is... |
Lyn: ๊ณ ์น (gochi). [slow] ๊ณ ์น (gochi). [normal] ๊ณ ์น (gochi). |
Eric: "Thanks for fixing my computer." |
[pause] |
Lyn: ์ปดํจํฐ ๊ณ ์ณ ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (keompyuteo gochyeo jwoseo gomawoyo.) [slow] ์ปดํจํฐ ๊ณ ์ณ ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (keompyuteo gochyeo jwoseo gomawoyo.) [normal] ์ปดํจํฐ ๊ณ ์ณ ์ค์ ๊ณ ๋ง์์. (keompyuteo gochyeo jwoseo gomawoyo.) |
