INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 22. Expressing Opinions.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing opinions.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "I think the new equipment is good."
Lyn: 새 기계는 좋은 것 같아요. (sae gigyeneun joeun geot gatayo.)
Lyn: [slow] 새 기계는 좋은 것 같아요. (sae gigyeneun joeun geot gatayo.)
Eric: The pattern for expressing opinions has 4 elements. First, the pronoun, "new."
Lyn: 새 (sae).
Eric: Second, the phrase, "machine is."
Lyn: 기계는 (gigyeneun).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "good."
Lyn: 좋 (jot).
Eric: And last, the phrase "I think that...."
Lyn: 은 것 같아요 (eun geot gatayo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "I think the new equipment is good."
Lyn: 새 기계는 좋은 것 같아요. (sae gigyeneun joeun geot gatayo.) [slow] 새 기계는 좋은 것 같아요. (sae gigyeneun joeun geot gatayo.) [normal] 새 기계는 좋은 것 같아요. (sae gigyeneun joeun geot gatayo.)
Eric: When you express your opinion, you can simply say the verb-stem and add..
Lyn: 은 것 같아요 (eun geot gatayo).
Eric: This phrase has the verb…
Lyn: 같다 (gatta)
Eric: meaning 'to be the same' or 'to be like.” So it literally means “It seems like…” or “It might be the same as…” This is the common expression to say “I think.”
Lyn: 새 기계는 좋은 것 같아요. (sae gigyeneun joeun geot gatayo.)
Eric: So remember that to express your opinion, simply use the sentence ending
Lyn: 은 것 같아요 (eun geot gatayo).
Eric: Note that when the verb-stem ends in a vowel, you need to say…
Lyn: ㄴ 것 같아요 (n geot gatayo).
Eric: ...instead.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I think that person is angry." First, the pronoun, "that."
Lyn: 저 (jeo).
Eric: Second, the phrase, "person." as an object.
Lyn: 사람은 (sarameun).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to get angry."
Lyn: 화나 (hwana).
Eric: And last, the phrase "I think that...."
Lyn: ㄴ 것 같아요 (n geot gatayo).
Eric: We use this phrase as the verb-stem ends in a vowel. Altogether we have...
Lyn: 저 사람은 화난 것 같아요. (jeo sarameun hwanan geot gatayo.) [slow] 저 사람은 화난 것 같아요. (jeo sarameun hwanan geot gatayo.) [normal] 저 사람은 화난 것 같아요. (jeo sarameun hwanan geot gatayo.)
Eric: "I think that person is angry."
[pause]
Lyn: 저 사람은 화난 것 같아요. (jeo sarameun hwanan geot gatayo.)
Eric: How do you say - "I think this bread is yummy." To give you a hint, the verb-stem "delicious" or “yummy” is...
Lyn: 맛있 (masit). [slow] 맛있 (masit). [normal] 맛있 (masit).
Eric: "I think this bread is yummy."
[pause]
Lyn: 이 빵 맛있는 것 같아요. (I ppang masinneun geot gatayo.) [slow] 이 빵 맛있는 것 같아요. (I ppang masinneun geot gatayo.) [normal] 이 빵 맛있는 것 같아요. (I ppang masinneun geot gatayo.)
[pause]
Lyn: 이 빵 맛있는 것 같아요. (I ppang masinneun geot gatayo.)

Eric: Let's review the sentences from this lesson. I will give you the English equivalent of the phrase and you are responsible for shouting it out loud in Korean. Here we go.
