| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for talking about something in the past. |
| PATTERN |
| Eric: For example, |
| Eric: "I met a friend last week." |
| Lyn: 지난 주에 친구를 만났어요. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.) |
| Lyn: [slow] 지난 주에 친구를 만났어요. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.) |
| Eric: The pattern for talking about something in the past has 4 elements. First, the phrase, "last week." |
| Lyn: 지난 주에 (jinan jue). |
| Eric: Second, the phrase "friend." as an object |
| Lyn: 친구를 (chingureul). |
| Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to meet." |
| Lyn: 만나 (manna). |
| Eric: And last, the sentence ending, "did." |
| Lyn: 았어요 (asseoyo). |
| Eric: Altogether, we have... "I met a friend last week." |
| Lyn: 지난 주에 친구를 만났어요. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.) [slow] 지난 주에 친구를 만났어요. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.) [normal] 지난 주에 친구를 만났어요. (jinan jue chingureul mannasseoyo.) |
| Eric: Since you are talking about an event in the past, make sure to use the sentence-ending… |
| Lyn: 았어요 (asseoyo.) |
| Eric: which switches the verb into the past-tense. You can use this ending when the last vowel in the verb-stem ends with… |

| Eric: If the last vowel in the verb-stem is not one of these, you need to use... |
| Lyn: 었어요 (eosseoyo.) |
| Eric: Or for the verbs ending with... |
| Lyn: 하다 (hada) |

| Eric: meaning “to study”, you need to use... |

| Eric: So remember that to talk about something in the past, simply use the appropriate sentence ending |
| Lyn: 았어요 (asseoyo) 었어요 (eosseoyo) or 였어요 (yeoseyo) |
| Eric: after the verb stem. |
| Eric: Here is another example meaning, "I ate lunch at 1 o'clock." First, the phrase, "at 1 o'clock." |
| Lyn: 1시에 (hansie). |
| Eric: Second, the noun "lunch." as an object |
| Lyn: 점심을 (jeomsimeul). |
| Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to eat." |
| Lyn: 먹 (meok). |
| Eric: And last, the sentence ending, "did." |
| Lyn: 었어요 (eosseoyo). |
| Eric: Altogether we have... |
