INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 18. Making Negative Commands.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for requesting someone to refrain from doing something.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "Do not smoke indoors."
Lyn: ์‹ค๋‚ด์—์„œ ๋‹ด๋ฐฐ ํ”ผ์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (sillaeeseo dambae piji maseyo.)
Lyn: [slow] ์‹ค๋‚ด์—์„œ ๋‹ด๋ฐฐ ํ”ผ์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (sillaeeseo dambae piji maseyo.)
Eric: The pattern for requesting someone to refrain from doing something has 4 elements. First, the phrase "indoor, inside a room."
Lyn: ์‹ค๋‚ด์—์„œ (sillaeeseo).
Eric: Second, the noun, "cigarette."
Lyn: ๋‹ด๋ฐฐ (dambae).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to smoke."
Lyn: ํ”ผ (pi).
Eric: And last, the phrase "please do not."
Lyn: ์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š” (ji maseyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "Do not smoke indoors."
Lyn: ์‹ค๋‚ด์—์„œ ๋‹ด๋ฐฐ ํ”ผ์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (sillaeeseo dambae piji maseyo.) [slow] ์‹ค๋‚ด์—์„œ ๋‹ด๋ฐฐ ํ”ผ์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (sillae-eseo dambae piji maseyo.) [normal] ์‹ค๋‚ด์—์„œ ๋‹ด๋ฐฐ ํ”ผ์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (sillaeeseo dambae piji maseyo.)
Eric: In order to ask someone not to do something, you need to use the phrase...
Lyn: -์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š” (-ji maseyo)
Eric: at the end of the sentence. To specify which action to refrain from, you just need to put the verb stem in front of
Lyn: -์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š” (-ji maseyo).
Eric: Therefore, you can say โ€œDonโ€™t smokeโ€ as inโ€ฆ
Lyn: ํ”ผ์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (piji maseyo.)
Eric: Also, you can also add a location at the beginning as we have in the example.
Lyn: ์‹ค๋‚ด์—์„œ ๋‹ด๋ฐฐ ํ”ผ์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (sillaeeseo dambae piji maseyo.)
Eric: So remember that to request someone to refrain from doing something, simply say the verb stem plus
Lyn: -์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š” (-ji maseyo).
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "Do not eat ramen in the classroom." First, the phrase "in a classroom."
Lyn: ๊ต์‹ค์—์„œ (gyosireseo).
Eric: Second, the noun, "ramen."
Lyn: ๋ผ๋ฉด (ramyeon).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to eat."
Lyn: ๋จน (meok).
Eric: And last, the phrase "please do not."
Lyn: ์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š” (ji maseyo).
Eric: Altogether we have...
Lyn: ๊ต์‹ค์—์„œ ๋ผ๋ฉด ๋จน์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (gyosireseo ramyeon meokji maseyo.) [slow] ๊ต์‹ค์—์„œ ๋ผ๋ฉด ๋จน์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (gyosireseo ramyeon meokji maseyo.) [normal] ๊ต์‹ค์—์„œ ๋ผ๋ฉด ๋จน์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (gyosireseo ramyeon meokji maseyo.)
Eric: "Do not eat ramen in the classroom."
[pause]
Lyn: ๊ต์‹ค์—์„œ ๋ผ๋ฉด ๋จน์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (gyosireseo ramyeon meokji maseyo.)
Eric: How do you say - "Do not make noise in the movie theater"? To give you a hint, the verb-stem, "to make a noise" is...
Lyn: ๋– ๋“ค (tteodeul). [slow] ๋– ๋“ค (tteodeul). [normal] ๋– ๋“ค (tteodeul).
Eric: "Do not make noise in the movie theater."
[pause]
Lyn: ์˜ํ™”๊ด€์—์„œ ๋– ๋“ค์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (yeonghwagwaneseo tteodeulji maseyo.) [slow] ์˜ํ™”๊ด€์—์„œ ๋– ๋“ค์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (yeonghwagwaneseo tteodeulji maseyo.) [normal] ์˜ํ™”๊ด€์—์„œ ๋– ๋“ค์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (yeonghwagwaneseo tteodeulji maseyo.)
[pause]
Lyn: ์˜ํ™”๊ด€์—์„œ ๋– ๋“ค์ง€ ๋งˆ์„ธ์š”. (yeonghwagwaneseo tteodeulji maseyo.)
