| Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 15. Using Verbs in Infinitive Form. |
| Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for expressing that you want to do something. |
| PATTERN |
| Eric: For example, |
| Eric: "I want to sleep all afternoon." |
| Lyn: 오후 내내 자고 싶어요. (ohu naenae jago sipeoyo.) |
| Lyn: [slow] 오후 내내 자고 싶어요. (ohu naenae jago sipeoyo.) |
| Eric: The pattern for expressing that you want to do something has 4 elements. First, the noun, "afternoon." |
| Lyn: 오후 (ohu). |
| Eric: Second, the adverb, "all." |
| Lyn: 내내 (naenae). |
| Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to sleep." |
| Lyn: 자 (ja). |
| Eric: And last, the phrase, "want to do something." |
| Lyn: 고 싶어요 (go sipeoyo). |
| Eric: Altogether, we have... "I want to sleep all afternoon." |
| Lyn: 오후 내내 자고 싶어요. (ohu naenae jago sipeoyo.) [slow] 오후 내내 자고 싶어요. (ohu naenae jago sipeoyo.) [normal] 오후 내내 자고 싶어요. (ohu naenae jago sipeoyo.) |
| Eric: In this example, we had the phrase... |
| Lyn: 고 싶어요 (go sipeoyo) |
| Eric: which means “I want to do something.” You need to put this after a verb-stem to mean what you want to do. Also, you can add adverbs meaning "all day" or "all afternoon" at the beginning of the sentence to say how much you want to do something. |
| Lyn: 오후 내내 자고 싶어요. (ohu naenae jago sipeoyo.) |
| Eric: So remember that to express your desire to do something, simply say the verb stem plus the sentence ending… |
| Lyn: 고 싶어요 (go sipeoyo). |
| Eric: Here is another example, "I want to rest all day." First, the noun, "day." |
| Lyn: 하루 (haru). |
| Eric: Second, the adverb, "all." |
| Lyn: 내내 (naenae). |
| Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to rest." |
| Lyn: 쉬 (swi). |
| Eric: And last, the phrase, "want to do something." |
| Lyn: 고 싶어요 (go sipeoyo). |
| Eric: Altogether we have... |
| Lyn: 하루 내내 쉬고 싶어요. (haru naenae swigo sipeoyo.) [slow] 하루 내내 쉬고 싶어요. (haru naenae swigo sipeoyo.) [normal] 하루 내내 쉬고 싶어요. (haru naenae swigo sipeoyo.) |
