INTRODUCTION |
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric. |
Lyn: And I'm Lyn. |
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 14. Asking About Manner. |
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about manner. |
PATTERN |
Eric: For example, |
Eric: "How did you find the restaurant?" |
Lyn: 식당 어떻게 찾았어요? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?) |
Lyn: [slow] 식당 어떻게 찾았어요? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?) |
Eric: The pattern for asking about manner has 4 elements. First, the noun, "restaurant." |
Lyn: 식당 (sikdang). |
Eric: Second, the adverb, "how." |
Lyn: 어떻게 (eotteoke ). |
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to find." |
Lyn: 찾 (chat). |
Eric: And last, the sentence ending, "did." |
Lyn: 았어요 (asseoyo). |
Eric: Altogether, we have... "How did you find the restaurant?" |
Lyn: 식당 어떻게 찾았어요? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?) [slow] 식당 어떻게 찾았어요? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?) [normal] 식당 어떻게 찾았어요? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?) |
Eric: Use the sentence pattern "how" plus a verb form to ask how someone did something. First, you need to turn the verb into the past tense. In the example, we used... |
Lyn: 었어요 (eoseoyo). |
Eric: Then, you can articulate the question by adding a noun as the object at the beginning. For example… |
Lyn: 식당 (sikdang) |
Eric: meaning “a restaurant.” All together, we have... |
Lyn: 식당 어떻게 찾았어요? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?) |
Eric: So remember that to ask how someone did something, simply say the adverb "how" plus the verb in the past tense. |
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "How did you open the door?" First, the noun, "door." |
Lyn: 문 (mun ). |
Eric: Second, the adverb, "how." |
Lyn: 어떻게 (eotteoke ). |
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to open." |
Lyn: 열 (yeol ). |
Eric: And last, the sentence ending, "did." |
Lyn: 었어요 (eosseoyo). |
Eric: Altogether we have... |
Lyn: 문 어떻게 열었어요? (mun eotteoke yeoreosseoyo?) [slow] 문 어떻게 열었어요? (mun eotteoke yeoreosseoyo?) [normal] 문 어떻게 열었어요? (mun eotteoke yeoreosseoyo?) |
Eric: "How did you open the door?" |
[pause] |
Lyn: 문 어떻게 열었어요? (mun eotteoke yeoreosseoyo?) |
Eric: How do you say - "How did you go to the school?" To give you a hint, the verb-stem "to go" is... |
Lyn: 가 (ga). [slow] 가 (ga). [normal] 가 (ga). |
Eric: "How did you go to the school?" |
[pause] |
Lyn: 학교 어떻게 갔어요? (hakgyo eotteoke gasseoyo) [slow] 학교 어떻게 갔어요? (hakgyo eotteoke gasseoyo?) [normal] 학교 어떻게 갔어요? (hakgyo eotteoke gasseoyo?) |
[pause] |
Lyn: 학교 어떻게 갔어요? (hakgyo eotteoke gasseoyo?) |
