INTRODUCTION
Eric: Hi everyone, I'm Eric.
Lyn: And I'm Lyn.
Eric: And welcome to Must-Know Korean Sentence Structures, Season 1, Lesson 14. Asking About Manner.
Eric: In this lesson, you'll learn how to use a sentence pattern for asking about manner.
PATTERN
Eric: For example,
Eric: "How did you find the restaurant?"
Lyn: ์‹๋‹น ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์ฐพ์•˜์–ด์š”? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?)
Lyn: [slow] ์‹๋‹น ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์ฐพ์•˜์–ด์š”? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?)
Eric: The pattern for asking about manner has 4 elements. First, the noun, "restaurant."
Lyn: ์‹๋‹น (sikdang).
Eric: Second, the adverb, "how."
Lyn: ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ (eotteoke ).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to find."
Lyn: ์ฐพ (chat).
Eric: And last, the sentence ending, "did."
Lyn: ์•˜์–ด์š” (asseoyo).
Eric: Altogether, we have... "How did you find the restaurant?"
Lyn: ์‹๋‹น ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์ฐพ์•˜์–ด์š”? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?) [slow] ์‹๋‹น ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์ฐพ์•˜์–ด์š”? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?) [normal] ์‹๋‹น ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์ฐพ์•˜์–ด์š”? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?)
Eric: Use the sentence pattern "how" plus a verb form to ask how someone did something. First, you need to turn the verb into the past tense. In the example, we used...
Lyn: ์—ˆ์–ด์š” (eoseoyo).
Eric: Then, you can articulate the question by adding a noun as the object at the beginning. For exampleโ€ฆ
Lyn: ์‹๋‹น (sikdang)
Eric: meaning โ€œa restaurant.โ€ All together, we have...
Lyn: ์‹๋‹น ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์ฐพ์•˜์–ด์š”? (sikdang eotteoke chajasseoyo?)
Eric: So remember that to ask how someone did something, simply say the adverb "how" plus the verb in the past tense.
Eric: Here is another example meaning, "How did you open the door?" First, the noun, "door."
Lyn: ๋ฌธ (mun ).
Eric: Second, the adverb, "how."
Lyn: ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ (eotteoke ).
Eric: Third, the verb stem, "to open."
Lyn: ์—ด (yeol ).
Eric: And last, the sentence ending, "did."
Lyn: ์—ˆ์–ด์š” (eosseoyo).
Eric: Altogether we have...
Lyn: ๋ฌธ ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์—ด์—ˆ์–ด์š”? (mun eotteoke yeoreosseoyo?) [slow] ๋ฌธ ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์—ด์—ˆ์–ด์š”? (mun eotteoke yeoreosseoyo?) [normal] ๋ฌธ ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์—ด์—ˆ์–ด์š”? (mun eotteoke yeoreosseoyo?)
Eric: "How did you open the door?"
[pause]
Lyn: ๋ฌธ ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ์—ด์—ˆ์–ด์š”? (mun eotteoke yeoreosseoyo?)
Eric: How do you say - "How did you go to the school?" To give you a hint, the verb-stem "to go" is...
Lyn: ๊ฐ€ (ga). [slow] ๊ฐ€ (ga). [normal] ๊ฐ€ (ga).
Eric: "How did you go to the school?"
[pause]
Lyn: ํ•™๊ต ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ๊ฐ”์–ด์š”? (hakgyo eotteoke gasseoyo) [slow] ํ•™๊ต ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ๊ฐ”์–ด์š”? (hakgyo eotteoke gasseoyo?) [normal] ํ•™๊ต ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ๊ฐ”์–ด์š”? (hakgyo eotteoke gasseoyo?)
[pause]
Lyn: ํ•™๊ต ์–ด๋–ป๊ฒŒ ๊ฐ”์–ด์š”? (hakgyo eotteoke gasseoyo?)
